Bruce Robinette of Virginia is Recipient of 2003 Whisman Award

WASHINGTON, March 20, 2003—Bruce K. Robinette, executive director of Virginia's LENOWISCO Planning District Commission from 1968 to 1991, was honored as the 2003 recipient of the John D. Whisman Vision Award at the annual training conference of the Development District Association of Appalachia (DDAA), held March 16–18 in Arlington, Virginia.

The DDAA presents the John D. Whisman Vision Award each year to an individual who has provided exemplary service and leadership in Appalachia and demonstrated a commitment to the ideals of state and federal cooperation. Under Robinette's leadership, the LENOWISCO Planning District Commission became a leader in regional approaches to economic development, as exemplified in its support for the creation of the 325-acre Duffield Industrial Park. The park now employs more than 1,100 people.

ARC Federal Co-Chair Anne B. Pope praised the choice of Robinette for the award. "I am especially proud that this year's winner is from my home area," she said. "Bruce Robinette's innovative leadership in bringing regional cooperation to bear on the development issues of southwest Virginia serves as a model for all of the local development districts of Appalachia. The many lives that he has touched and improved will remain an enduring testimony to his guidance and dedication. He richly deserves the recognition for his exceptional efforts on behalf of the people of Appalachia."

Established in 1976 by the executive directors of Appalachia's local development districts, the DDAA provides professional and technical training opportunities for local economic development officials and community leaders and promotes improved communication and quality of service throughout the Region. Over 300 local development officials representing the 72 economic planning and development districts in Appalachia attended the DDAA's 2003 training conference.
