Ms.
Helen Mayberry of Washita, Arkansas has been a cooperative observer for the National Weather
Service (NWS) for 20 years (as of November, 2006). During that time, she collected
rainfall data on a daily basis and sent her measurements to the NWS.
The measurements became part of a national database and are eventually published (for use
by business, government agencies and the general public) by the National Climatic Data
Center in Asheville, North Carolina. Ms. Mayberry is one of the many cooperative observers
who provides data used by the National Weather Service to make a more accurate weather
forecast. Her data is also used to support river forecasting as well as the agricultural,
construction and recreational interests in her area.
For
her efforts, Ms. Mayberry received a 20 Year Length-of-Service Award. The award was
presented by Jimmy Russell (right in the photo above), the Observations
Program Leader at the National Weather Service in Little Rock, Arkansas. |
