Major Collections Outside of Hungary

This page provides an overview of the Hungarian Collections, illustrated by specific examples. The British Library Slavonic and East European Section acquires material across the spectrum of the humanities and social sciences. It is responsible for obtaining and making available material published in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and for material in the languages of those countries published anywhere in the world.

This page provides a description of the highlights of the Hungarian collections at the Library of Congress. As of December 2005 the Library possessed nearly 200,000 works on Hungary and Hungarians or by Hungarian authors, including 2,700 journals and magazines and 120 newspapers. The Hungarian collection is well developed in all areas, and its strength is maintained through the systematic purchasing of books from Hungary, as well as the automatic exchange of material with the National Széchényi Library, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and other major Hungarian educational and cultural institutions.

Hungarian Electronic Library (Magyar Elektronikus Könyvtár -- MEK) / (http://mek.oszk.hu)
One of the most significant text-archives of the Hungarian Web space. Contains thousands of full-text works in the humanities and social sciences. Most texts are in Hungarian.

Corvinus Library (http://www.hungarian-history.hu/index.htm)
Texts of books on Hungarian history, published in the United States in English, plus some other titles translated from Hungarian. Also includes some links to other sites related to Hungary.

Libinfo: The Online Information Service of Hungarian Libraries (http://libinfo.oszk.hu/index.php)
Provides online reference assistance for Hungary-related questions. Service provided by a consortium of 124 libraries and individuals, and coordinated by the National SzÉchényi Library. In Hungarian.

The Association of Hungarian Librarians (AHL) is a national, non-governmental, non-profit organization of librarians and other information professionals, libraries and information institutes. Site contains information about the organization's structure, membership, events, international connections, and publications. This site is in English, although the Association's Newsletter is in Hungarian.

Hungarian Library Institute (http://www.ki.oszk.hu/)
Provides a variety of services for Hungarian librarians, including continuing education, conferences and workshops, research about Hungarian libraries, and more. Also provides statistical and other data for every library in Hungary. In Hungarian.

Provides a description of holdings, several online databases, advice for genealogists, and contact information. In Hungarian, English, and German.

Open Society Archives (http://www.osa.ceu.hu)
The collections and activities of the Open Society Archives (OSA) and Research Center relate to the period after the Second World War, mainly the Cold War, and includes material related to the history of the formerly communist countries, human rights, and war crimes.
