Bahrain is an island country in the Arabian Gulf in southwest Asia. Bahrain has about the same area as Chicago. Bahrain has been a major center area of trade and communications in the Arabian Gulf region for many centuries. The country remained underdeveloped until the discovery of oil in 1932. Today, the nation has one of the highest standards of living in the Gulf area. Manamah is the capital, largest city, and chief commercial center. Bahrain is headed by king. The king appoints a Council of Ministers that actually runs the government. The Council consists of 12 members plus prime minister who heads the group. Arabs make up about ninety percent of the population. About all the people are Muslims, and Islam is the national religion. Bahraini government has broadened the economy by developing commerce in the Gulf region.
