Idle Reduction Basics
Each year, U.S. trucks consume more than 800 million gallons of diesel fuel—without even moving. Truckers idle their engines while they rest for a variety of reasons, including heating and cooling, preventing start-up problems, and operating electrical equipment. If the idling of other vehicles is added, estimates of annual fuel use due to idling approach 3 billion gallons.
Conserving fuel that would otherwise be idled away is an opportunity to reduce petroleum consumption. This page lists basic idle reduction topics. To learn more, choose from the following pages.
