The 7th Annual Earth Day
Celebration
Bahia Honda State Park
Bahia Honda Key, Florida
On Saturday, 13 April 2002,
Bahia Honda State Park held their 7th Annual Earth Day Celebration.
The celebration included free entrance to the park, a live band,
a barbecue tent, and the presence of several environmentally-oriented
local organizations (including the National
Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in Key West).
Other organizations included the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary,
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Newfound Harbor
Marine Research Institute, Reef Relief, Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority,
University of Florida Cooperative Extension Service, U.S. Coast
Guard Station Marathon, and the Marathon Turtle Hospital.
The event began at 9:00 a.m., and lasted until about 3:00 p.m.
The National Weather Service
in Key West hosted approximately 350 visitors during the Earth Day
Celebration, including locals and tourists, children and adults.
Numerous brochures on National Weather Service operations and hazardous
weather were provided to visitors for their education and enjoyment.
In addition, we distributed cloud charts and hurricane tracking
charts. We operated a portable NOAA Weather Radio for the
entire event, and a radiosonde, parachute, and balloon were displayed
as well. Several questions from interested attendees were
entertained by personnel from the National Weather Service Forecast
Office serving the Florida Keys.
