HURRICANE SAFETY
ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN KEY WEST,
FL
Hello, I'm Richard
Sturbin of the Oak Ridge Boys. Hurricanes are the greatest
severe weather threat to the Florida Keys, however, there
are personal and family safety measures which you can use
to decrease the danger and destruction caused by hurricanes.
Before the
hurricane season begins, develop an evacuation plan. Know
the risks of hurricanes in the Florida Keys and learn the
location of official shelters in the Keys. Ensure that you
have enough non-perishable food and water supplies on hand
and that your home or business is properly secured. Keep trees
and shrubbery on your property trimmed. Develop a plan to
properly secure or relocate your boat.
During a hurricane
watch, frequently listen to NOAA Weather Radio
operated by the National Weather Service in Key West, for
the latest information on the hurricane and recommended safety
actions.
You should also
make sure all family vehicles are operating properly, secure
mobile home tie downs, have an extra supply of cash, stock
up on canned food, first aid supplies, drinking water, medications
and batteries, and cover all door and window openings with
shutters or shielding materials.
During a hurricane
warning, NOAA weather radio will have the latest in warnings
and evacuation information. If told to evacuate, evacuate
early. U.S. Highway 1 out of the Keys will likely have large
traffic delays in an evacuation process. Leave mobile homes
in any case. Notify neighbors and family members outside the
warned area of your evacuation plans. Make plans for your
pets as most shelters and hotels/motels will not accept pets.
If you are staying
in a home during a hurricane, turn the refrigerator to maximum
cold and open only when necessary, turn off utilities if told
so by local authorities, turn off propane tanks, unplug small
appliances and fill bathtub and large containers with water
for sanitary purposes.
Remember, storm
surge and heavy rainfall will likely flood most lower sections
of homes and businesses if they are not elevated. The safest
place during strong winds is in a small interior room of a
home or building.
