U.S. Department of Labor Women’s Bureau Announces Release of
“How To” Manual and Archives for Science and Technology
Mentoring

WASHINGTON—As a part of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Secretary Elaine L. Chao’s Strengthening the Family in the 21st century initiative, the Women’s Bureau (WB) has released to the public a “How To” manual providing information on its GEM-SET program, which provides young women all across the United States with a variety of mentors and resources in the fields of science, engineering and technology. The Archives contains questions and answers from GEM-SET students and mentors.

“GEM-SET is a powerful example of how to motivate young women into technology-based careers,” said Women’s Bureau Director Shinae Chun. “Both the ‘How-To’ Manual and the Archives are excellent sources for information and replication.”

The Women’s Bureau (WB) at the DOL worked with University of Illinois at Chicago to create the GEM-SET program in 2001. With mentors from all over the nation, GEM-SET gives guidance to young women ages 13-18 interested in careers in these fields. The manual contains a full guide about how to create a science, engineering and technology mentoring programs for young girls and women.

The GEM-SET program has had over 200 mentors and more than 900 students participating from all over the United States. Available to participants is a renewable one-year membership, with the option of becoming junior mentors after high school graduation. This year, GEM-SET focused on working with more than 300 young women from urban and/or immigrant populations residing in major cities like Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami and New York.

Continuing their support, the WB created the manual to provide guidance, assistance, and tips to those who wish to replicate the GEM-SET program or design similar programs. It includes information on funding and staffing, technology needs, recruiting and community out-reach, tips for future programs and sustainability.

The manual is now available online and will later be available in print and CD copy. For information, please visit www.dol.gov/wb.
