Maine Girls Collaborative Project Kick-Off Conference

Fiscal Year 2008 Working Women in Transition Program Accomplishments

Description: The Women’s Bureau has partnered with Connections to Success in St. Louis, MO to coordinate the Region VII WWIT project. Connections to Success (CtS) is an innovative, non-profit, faith-based organization providing services and programs designed to break the cycle of poverty one family at a time. The WWIT project serves unemployed and underemployed low-income women, including single heads of households from the greater St. Louis metropolitan area. The foundation of the project is an 80-hour Personal and Professional Development Workshop. It begins with individualized and comprehensive assessments of participants’ strengths and abilities to assess employability. Following this, participants receive training on community resources and support systems to help them develop strategies for overcoming barriers to career-focused employment. Additional components of the workshop include: decision-making and problem-solving exercises, personal presentation training, life plan development, interest and talent assessments, career exploration, resume development, creation of a self-marketing plan, networking exercises and completion of an interviewing and negotiating workshop. Following the Personal and Professional Development curriculum, participants’ aptitudes and interests will be evaluated to direct them to appropriate job training opportunities.
