The Passing of Jeane Kirkpatrick

Secretary Condoleezza Rice
Washington, DC
December 8, 2006

It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Jeane Kirkpatrick. Jeane was a lifelong advocate for human rights, freedom and democracy around the world, both in her role as U.S Ambassador to the United Nations and in her work in academia.

She was a role model for me as an academic and policymaker, and I will always remember her generosity in sharing with young professionals her wisdom and professional advice. She inspired a generation with being the first woman to serve as America’s permanent representative to the United Nations. Jeane was a person of extraordinary intellect, spirit, and generosity. I will miss her.
