10/05/2006 -- On-the-Record Briefing En Route to Baghdad, Iraq

PRIME MINISTER MALIKI: (Via interpreter)I'd like to welcome the U.S. Secretary of State and her accompanying delegation during their visit here to Baghdad. I believe this visit will be an opportunity for consultations and dialogue on a number of issues that are important to both countries. We will be able to discuss a variety of mutual interests and regional interests, a lot important to both of us. We just concluded the first set of meetings and will be followed by another set of meetings later on tonight.

I would like to thank Prime Minister Maliki for the warm reception. I also would like to thank him very much for his excellent leadership of Iraq. This is an important time and a challenge for the Iraqi people, but they are a strong people, they are a committed people and we know that they will overcome these challenges.

The United States will be a committed friend for Iraq and we will have further consultations. But in order to allow the Prime Minister to go and break the fast, we are going to make this short because I was a little late in getting here as you know. The Prime Minister has been generous with his time and we will have a chance to continue our discussions later.

Thank you very much.
