What is SKYWARN TM?

SKYWARN LOGO
"SKYWARN TM" is a program the NWS uses to improve severe storm warnings. Trained volunteers serve as storm spotters...passing on vital "ground truth" information to forecasters during severe weather episodes. They are the eyes and ears not only for forecasters, but for their whole community.

SKYWARN TM volunteers come from all walks of life but they all have generally two things in common...an interest in the weather, and an interest in serving their community. Organizations frequently involved in the effort include...
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Any person or organization can become SKYWARN TM spotters, but must first receive training from the National Weather Service. Spotter training classes are offered periodically. Check the schedule of classes often to see when the next one is being offered in your area. For more information on the SKYWARN TM program for the northern and central parts of Georgia, you can contact Barry Gooden, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the NWS Forecast Office in Peachtree City.
