Intergovernmental Affairs

Welcome to the Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA). We provide international outreach services to state and local elected officials in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and all other inhabited U.S. territories. We also work closely with the National Governors Association, National Conference of State Legislatures, U.S. Conference of Mayors, National League of Cities and similar groups.

At IGA, we help governors, state legislators, mayors, and other elected officials in a variety of ways, which include:

  • Organizing briefings on foreign policy issues and international markets;
  • Providing information on exchange programs and sister city relationships;
  • Supporting trade missions and other official trips abroad;
  • Welcoming foreign dignitaries to the United States;
  • Coordinating meetings between Department of State experts and state and local officials.
