Media Note Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC July 6, 2007 Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns to Travel to Chile, Uruguay and BrazilUnder Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns will travel to Chile, Uruguay and Brazil July 9-12, 2007. He will meet with President Bachelet of Chile, President Vazquez of Uruguay, and Foreign Minister Amorim of Brazil.
He will be joined in Uruguay and Brazil by Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Thomas Shannon. The Under Secretary will speak at the first U.S.-Brazil Innovation Summit, a ground-breaking event aimed at developing an agenda for increased cooperation between private and public sectors. He will consult with leaders on a broad range of political and economic issues including regional and global security, environmental protection, energy, and trade. In Brazil, he will discuss biofuels cooperation, building on the U.S.-Brazil Memorandum of Understanding signed in March 2007. In all three countries, he will discuss our strong foreign policy connections on regional and international issues. This visit follows a trip by President Bush and Secretary Rice to Latin America in March.
