Human Plague– Four States,
2006 (10/31/06)
http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5534a4.htm
In 2006, a total of 13 human plague cases have been reported among residents
of four states: New Mexico (seven cases), Colorado (three cases), California
(two cases), and Texas (one case). This is the largest number of cases
reported in a single year in the United States since 1994. The median age of
patients was 43 years; eight (62%) patients were female. This report
summarizes six of the 13 cases, highlighting the severity and diverse
clinical presentations of plague and underscoring the need for prompt
diagnosis and treatment when plague is suspected. The natural reservoir of
plague is wild rodents.

Toxoplasmosis and
Pregnant Women
http://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/pregnant.htm
Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii.
This parasite is carried by cats and is passed in their feces (stool).
Pregnant women need to be aware that toxoplasmosis can cause problems with
pregnancy, including abortion. However, people are more likely to get
toxoplasmosis from eating undercooked meat or gardening than from contact
with pet cats. By following simple safety tips, pregnant women can reduce
the risk of getting toxoplasmosis from cats.
