Guidelines and Recommendations

Below are selected prevention and treatment guidelines, recommendations, frameworks, approaches, and other documents related to environmental health. Also see related links on this page.

About Healthy Places
http://www.cdc.gov/healthyplaces/about.htm
Just as there are characteristics of the environment known to create unsafe conditions or foster disease, certain aspects of the environment may promote health and well-being. For example, designing walking trails and safe bicycle paths throughout our communities can promote increased physical activity. This Web site provides information on the aspects of the environment that can lead to healthier communities and healthier people.

Vessel Sanitation Program
http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/vsp/default.htm
If you are planning a cruise, find out how the ship you plan to vacation on scored on its sanitation inspection. The inspection focuses on the ship's water supply, spas and pools, food, employee hygiene, ship condition, and training programs. Every vessel that has a foreign itinerary, carries 13 or more passengers, and calls on a U.S. Port is subject to unannounced twice-yearly inspections and, when necessary, to reinspection by Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) staff. Because of several major disease outbreaks on cruise vessels, the CDC established the VSP in the early 1970s as a cooperative activity with the cruise ship industry.
