The Prisoner Reentry Initiative (PRI), established in 2004, is a four-year grant program designed to provide ex-offenders returning to their communities with employment-centered services provided by faith-based and community initiative. Under the initiative, grants were awarded to 30 recipients in November of 2005. Working with other cabinet agencies such as the Department of Justice and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the U.S. Department of Labor help ex-offenders with Job Training, Job Placement, Mentoring and other supportive services.
In order to qualify for participation in the PRI, ex-offenders must be 18 yrs of age or older, and carry non-violent and non-sexual related offenses. The grants are given to organizations in urban areas that have a high-level of need. As of July 13, 2007, the PRI has served 8,176 ex-offenders with only 11 percent returning to prison.
