Registration Weight Trip Permits
General Information
The registration weight permit allows a motor vehicle currently registered in Oregon to be operated at weight greater than allowed by its current registration.

The following is illegal, without a valid registration weight trip permit:
  • For a vehicle with passenger registration to pull a heavy trailer weighing over 8,000 pounds; or
  • For a vehicle with passenger registration to operate at a registration weight* over 10,000 pounds.
A registration weight trip permit cannot be used with currently registered “For Rent” vehicles.

Examples of when a registration weight trip permit may be used include:
  • A pickup truck with passenger registration may tow a trailer registered as a light trailer; no permit is needed.  However, if the loaded weight of the trailer becomes greater than 8,000 pounds, it is more than light trailer registration allows and it is illegal for a passenger vehicle to pull it (without a permit). If the trailer weight increase is temporary, the owner can buy a Registration Weight Trip Permit for the pickup truck instead of permanently changing the registration on the pickup to heavy motor vehicle (T plates) and the light trailer to heavy trailer.
  • A pickup truck with passenger plates may need to temporarily tow a vehicle registered as a heavy trailer but this is not legal without a permit, so a Registration Weight Trip permit may be used.  However, if the truck will regularly tow a heavy trailer, the truck registration must be changed to a heavy motor vehicle (T plates)
* DMV registration weight is the total empty weight of all vehicles in a combination plus the total weight of the load carried on that combination of vehicles, not including the weight of the following trailing vehicles:
1. Campers
2. Fixed Loads (refer to ORS 801.285
3. Light Trailers (loaded weight of 8,000 pounds or less)
4. Manufactured Structures
5. Special Use Trailers
6. Towed Motor Vehicles
7. Travel Trailers
Note: Heavy trailers do not include travel trailers, fixed loads, or special use trailers.

Note: A registration weight trip permit is not required for the owner to tow their commercial fishing boat when it weighs more than the allowed registration weight of the trailer, if the registration weight of the towing vehicle, trailer, and boat is 15,000 pounds or less.

Weight-Mile Tax or Over-Dimensional Permits
Vehicles with a combined weight over 26,000 pounds may be subject to weight-mile tax, and vehicles with a combined weight over 80,000 pounds require an over dimensional permit. You may contact the Motor Carrier Transportation Division at (503) 378-6699 for more information.
