Changing to a Different License Plate

Using renewal reminder
DMV mails registration renewal reminders about 45 days before the expiration date.
Renewal reminders for passenger vehicles with regular tree plates will show options and fees for changing to Salmon, Crater Lake, or Cultural plates.  You can:
  • Use the reminder to renew and change plates by mail, or
  • If eligible to renew online, you apply to change plates online when renewing, or
  • You can visit a DMV office to renew and change plates. 
If you want to apply for other types of plates not listed on your renewal reminder, see "How to Apply" below.
 
If you lost your renewal reminder, you may contact DMV for a duplicate, or use the instructions below.  If you want to order a plate not listed on your renewal reminder, use instructions below.
 
Without renewal reminder
Use the instructions below if:
  • If it is between renewal times for your vehicle, or
  • You do not have a renewal reminder, or
  • You want a plate not listed as an option on your renewal reminder.

How to Apply
  • Application: Application for Registration or Replacement Plates and/or Stickers  
  • Fees:
    • Registration fee (depends on your vehicle type)
    • $5 plate fee
    • Plate surcharge (depends on the plate – see details at links on the license plate page)
    • Replacement fee:
      • Between renewal periods: $10 replacement fee.  (If 120 days or more before registration expires, for two-year registration).
      • At renewal:  $5 replacement fee.  You can renew up to 120 days before your registration expires. 
      • When changing to a different class of registration, there is no replacement fee.  Examples: changing from passenger to Truck, Special Interest, or Disabled Veteran.
  • Mail your completed application and fees (make checks or money orders payable to “Oregon DMV”):  to:

  • You may also take your application and fees to a DMV office.  DMV offices accept checks, money orders, or cash.
