LOOK
WHAT'S NEW:
FBI FOIA has gone digital!
08/13/04
If you
haven't gone to foia.fbi.gov in a while, you'll hardly recognize the
place. A complete renovation!
What's
new?
1. A
new look--making it easier to navigate through the full
FOIA reading room index of the FBI's most frequently requested
documents that are stored in hard copy at a public room at FBI Headquarters...and
also making it easier to browse through our "virtual" reading
room, where we put the FULL TEXT of the really popular documents--on
spies, gangsters, famous people, lots of historical and "unusual" case
materials.
2. Expedited
means to make FOIA requests. Don't faint--in some cases it's
possible to make and submit
your request online. Here's the run down:
- If
you want to request information in FBI central records about an organization,
business, investigation, historical event, or incident,
you may submit your
request online. Of course you can still submit your request by
fax or mail too--just print out the form and send it as directed.
- What
if you are requesting information about a third party? You must mail
us either his or her notarized authorization--or the privacy
waiver and certification of identity form that you can print
out from our site.
- What
about requesting information about someone who is deceased? Just
get proof of death and complete identifiers and fax or mail the request
to us. Details inside.
3. Clear
instructions on how to request any information in FBI central
records about yourself. It's a separate form--which
you can print
out, complete according to the instructions,
and mail in to us. Because we need your signature on this document,
you can't submit this online.
And
please come back often to browse. Our "librarians" are
filling our virtual Reading
Room shelves with popular documents as fast as they can, everything
from Alcoholics Anonymous to UFOs.
