TROUGH An elongated area of relatively low air pressure that can occur at all levels of the atmosphere. Wind flow across a trough is curved cyclonically (counterclockwise) in the northern hemisphere. Air typically ascends ahead of troughs, which usually promotes clouds and/or precipitation formation given sufficient moisture and instability. In contrast, air behind troughs typically descends, which usually promotes clearing skies. Opposite of ridge.
