OSHA Partners with Contractors To Protect Workers On Federal Courthouse Project

ERIE -- Reducing the number of injuries, illnesses and fatalities during the construction of the Erie Federal Courthouse, is the centerpiece of a safety partnership agreement signed today (July 31, 2002) by OSHA, the site contractors headed by Mascaro Construction and the Great Lakes Building Council.

"This partnership focuses on the safety of the workers during the construction project," said John Stranahan, area director of the Erie Office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. "We hope to achieve the goal of recognizing and fixing hazards before serious injury or illness can occur through effective safety and health programs designed for this specific project. It will involve every participating contractor and subcontractor."

OSHA will work with the site employers to eliminate serious accidents and also recognize those contractors with exemplary safety and health programs. "Partnerships allow for better use of OSHA's resources," said Stranahan. "They encourage innovative safety management and encourage participation in the safety process from the construction/trade association community."

One of OSHA's major strategic goals is to reduce fatalities in the construction industry by 15 percent by focusing on the four leading causes of construction fatalities: falls, struck-by accidents, crushed-by accidents, and electrocutions.

OSHA's "Strategic Partnerships for Worker Safety and Health" are available for all industries. They aim to have a measurable, positive impact on workplace safety and health that goes beyond traditional enforcement methods.
