OSHA, Consolidated Edison, to Present Free Construction Safety Course in Spanish Feb. 26 at Sarah Lawrence College

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Consolidated Edison will present a free, day-long course in Spanish on construction safety and health in the workplace on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006.

The course, which will run from 8a.m. to 6 p.m., will be presented in the Titworth Building lecture hall at Sarah Lawrence College, 1 Mead Way, Bronxville, N.Y. Orange and Rockland Utilities, the Westchester Hispanic Coalition, Inc., the American Society of Safety Engineers, Metro Chapter, and the New York Dept. of Labor's safety consultation program will also participate.

Training will address such topics as fall protection, excavation safety, electrical hazards, scaffolds, ladders and stairs, hand and power tools, hazard communication, industrial hygiene, fire protection and construction health hazards. There will be an emphasis on 'hands-on" training, with workers handling equipment and tools as they learn correct methods of working safely in a variety of construction situations.

Consolidated Edison will make a presentation highlighting the hazards associated with excavation and underground gas lines while Orange and Rockland Utilities will make a presentation on the hazards associated with overhead power lines. A miniature tubular welded scaffold will be used for training in scaffold safety.

Upon completion of the course, workers will be provided with the OSHA 10-hour Construction Course Card certifying that they have completed the course.

Participants may register or obtain more information (including available transportation) by calling Soraya at the Westchester Hispanic Coalition at (914) 937-0809 or Mika at Sarah Lawrence College at (914) 316-3105 or OSHA's Tarrytown area office at (914) 524-7510.
