This earthquake was the strongest in 8 years in the area,
and resulted in two deaths, 14 injuries, and damage
estimated at about $3 million. The epicenter was located
in rough hill country about 7 miles north of
the small town of Inangahua. Major landslides
occurred in the gorge of the Buller River, with slumping,
fissuring, and fountaining. Bridges were badly damaged,
houses razed, and railway lines distorted.
