"Readiness Through Safety"
Military Sealift Command is committed to accomplishing our mission safely and efficiently. Safeguarding our ships and their cargo, our people and the environment is a command priority. Our comprehensive safety program incorporates international, federal and Department of Defense standards, integrates industry best practices and provides a mechanism for review and continuous improvement.
Our afloat safety programs are based on the International Ship Management (ISM) Code. Within that international framework, MSC's safety procedures are developed in partnership with our mariners, shoreside managers and industry partners who help us to identify hazards, establish controls and prevent incidents through a series of user-friendly procedures. This vigilance ensures that MSC is prepared to respond to the transportation, supply, prepositioning and special mission needs of U.S. forces.
MSC teams with other Navy commands to raise safety awareness and tackle complex safety challenges through formal avenues, such as the Navy Operational Safety Committee and Navy Operational Safety Support Committee. We also work with our maritime industry partners through the National Safety Council's Waterborne Transportation Group.
MSC ensures safe day-to-day operations by working with our personnel on the ground to identify and mitigate potential hazards and by quickly distributing lessons learned throughout the command. Throughout our operations we reduce avoidable mishaps and occupational illness by managing potential error and mitigating consequence.
Military Sealift Command’s safety newsletter is unique to the maritime industry. The full-color publication provides important information including safety bulletins, lessons learned and safety quizzes. Safety on Ships is published six times a year.
