In the Oregon WIC Program, the WIC-Approved foods that may be purchased with WIC vouchers are selected based on several different factors.

These factors are:

A team of nutrition experts looks at different foods to put on the WIC-Approved Food List.  Foods that will improve the diet of WIC participants are chosen. When there are two or more products that have the same nutritional value, WIC usually chooses the less expensive product. This allows WIC to serve more participants.

There are certain nutrients that WIC participants often lack in their diets. These nutrients are:

  • protein
  • calcium
  • iron
  • vitamins A & C
  • folic acid or folate
These nutrients are important to healthy development during pregnancy, lactation and early childhood.

A food package is a set list of foods that a WIC participant receives based upon their nutrition need. The food package is printed on the WIC voucher. A variety of food packages are provided for different categories of participants such as:

  • pregnant women
  • breastfeeding women
  • infants
  • children under 5 years of age

WIC foods include:

Specific brands of . . .

  • adult cereals fortified with iron and folic acid
  • vitamin C-rich 100% fruit juices
  • iron-fortified infant formulas
  • infant cereals

Most brands of . . .

  • Milk, eggs, cheese, peanut butter, tuna fish, carrots and dried beans or peas.
  • Special infant formulas and certain medical foods may be provided when prescribed by a physician or health professional for a specified medical condition.
