Fires in Western Canada

Dozens of fires were filling the skies over British Columbia with smoke on August 21, 2003.

On August 5, 2003, large fires continued to burn in western Canada, and although thousands of people who had been evacuated were permitted to return to their homes, several thousand more will still waiting to be given permission to return. The two large fires (marked in red) pictured in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Terra satellite are the Chilko Lake Fire (left) and the McClure Fire (right).

The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS’ maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters.
