Within the office of Public Liaison, the Washington Programs team coordinates Department programs for public groups upon request. Students, corporate executives, and educators are among the many that visit the U.S. Department of State.

Recent Programs

  • Fifth graders from North Star Academy in Newark, New Jersey, met with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in the Diplomatic Reception Rooms.
  • A group of high school teachers participated in a half-day seminar learning about the resources that the Department provides for educators and students.
  • College students participating in a summer program sponsored by the Fund for American Studies visited the Department for two issue briefings.

Deputy Assistant Secretary Alina Romanowski (behind rostrum) addressed a group of educators about U.S. public diplomacy efforts.

High school teachers from the mid-Atlantic region attend "Hot Topics in Foreign Policy" seminar at the State Department. Participants met with various Department officials and learned about the Department's resources for educators and students.

Teachers browse reading material spread on tables, and chat with Dept. employees seated behind tables answering questions and handing out brochures.

During the seminar, teachers had the opportunity to explore State Department educational resources with representatives from the Department.


Fund for American Studies

College students participating in a summer program through the Fund for American Studies asked Under Secretary for Global Affairs and Democracy Paula Dobrianksy questions after the issue briefing. Their questions covered issues such as human rights, democracy and development.
