James Ballinger (Phoenix, AZ)

James Ballinger has been director of the Phoenix Art Museum since 1982, having started his career at the museum in December 1974 as curator of collections. Exhibitions he has directed at the museum include Diego Rivera: The Cubist Years (1984), which toured to the IBM Gallery of Art & Science in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, and the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City; Frank Lloyd Wright Drawings – Masterworks from the Taliesin Archives (1990); and Frederic Remington’s Southwest (1992), which toured to the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Tennessee and the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha. Publications include a number of exhibition catalogues and Frederic Remington for the American Artists Library series (1989, Harry N. Abrams), Frederic Remington’s Southwest exhibition catalogue (1982, Phoenix Art Museum), and Phoenix Art Museum Collection Highlights (2002, selected entries). Ballinger received his B.A. in American History and his M.A. in Art History, with specialization in American Art, from the University of Kansas. In 2002, he attended the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders – Arts at Stanford University. He has been a member of the board of directors of the Association of Art Museum Directors since 2002, currently serves on the board for the Phoenix Community Alliance, and the advisory board for the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. During 2003, he served as a member of the Maricopa Regional Arts and Cultural Task Force, and in 2004 he was named Nonprofit Director of the Year by the Organization of Nonprofit Executives of Arizona.
