NPS Resource Management Assistant

Position Description
Works in cooperation with the Resource Management Specialist and other park staff on natural resource projects in the park. Volunteer will be responsible for working on different biological field studies, surveys, habitat projects. Such duties include: water quality testing and monitoring, visitor and grazing impact studies, wildlife surveys and monitoring, hazardous fuel removal, Gypsy Moth monitoring, bird surveyor, invasive plant control and GIS/GPS maping.

Qualifications: Must possess experience or education in biological or natural resources. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions and in high heat and humidity. Most work is performed in the field, often on uneven terrain with poor footing, moderate to heavy lifting may be required. If using a government vehicle a valid drivers license is required

We have a volunteer and seasonal house with five rooms and three baths. Space is limited during the summer. Applications must be in early, because seasonal park guides receive first spaces. No RV Hookups.

Living History at Grand Portage National Monument

JOB TITLE
Grand Portage National Monument is looking for motivated, enthusiastic individuals and educators to work as historical, cultural and natural interpreters. We are currently accepting applications for historic, cultural and natural volunteer positions in interpretation.

DATES
There are approximately six positions available. They start May 19, 2008. Options to commit to an additional 6 to 8 weeks. Strong consideration will be given to applicants that state their availability dates, and commit to a minimum 10-week period. The Monument is open to the public from Memorial weekend May 24 until Columbus weekend October 13.

DUTIES
Would you enjoy living history, the outdoors and talking with and educating people from around the world? Come join us at Grand Portage National Monument where natural and cultural history and geography come together at an 8 ½ mile portage connecting the beautiful shores of Lake Superior to northwestern North America the Pacific and the Arctic. Volunteers at Grand Portage have many opportunities to learn and educate----help build a fur trade canoe of birchbark, make birchbark baskets, learn to safely demonstrate loading and firing a Northwest Gun, the primary trade musket used during the fur trade, cook historic recipes in a large reconstructed and furnished kitchen, staff areas such as a great hall, canoe warehouse, Ojibwe village and voyageur encampment and engage the visiting public in conversations about fur trade activities and lifestyles, learn about the Ojibwe community of Grand Portage and present programs and demonstrations about Grand Portage history to visitors. Do all this while wearing dress of the 18th and early 19th centuries provided by the Monument.

SKILLS
Ability to present an interesting, informative and interpretive program to an audience consisting of 2 to 40 visitors. Patience to answer the same question to the sixteenth consecutive visitor with a smile on your face as you perform station interpretation in the great hall. You will receive two weeks of training on Grand Portage’s historical, cultural and natural history, preparing interpretive programs and station interpretation, historic cooking and craft demonstrations.

COMPENSATION
In support of your valuable VIP contributions of 24 hours during a particular week, we offer a place to park your mobile home or travel trailer with full RV hookups: water, sewer, electrical, phone (on your established account) connections, and access to washers and dryers. Other housing is extremely limited in Grand Portage. A small number of shared housing units may be available dependent on requirements of other seasonal staff. We request a commitment of ten weeks or longer and attendance at seasonal training from May 19 through about June 2, 2008. Training includes an Ojibwe culture day, opportunities for first aid and CPR, Monument operations, and training in historic weapons demonstrations offered by a premier National Park Service black powder instructor and a hike along the Grand Portage footpath with our knowledgeable staff.

AREA DESCRIPTION
Grand Portage National Monument comprises 710 acres within the Grand Portage Indian Reservation. Reconstructed structures of the Monument are located on Grand Portage Bay in the community of Grand Portage. The community has a post office, convenience store, gas station, 100 room lodge and casino and a community center which includes a computer library within a mile of the Monument. The town of Grand Marais, Minnesota is about 40 miles west on Highway 61. Grand Marais is the current location of Monument headquarters and is a small community with three grocery stores, auto repair facilities and the famous North house Folk School. The city of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada is 50 miles east on Highway 61, has all the usual amenities found in cities. A car is recommended but not required. A car could be very useful to explore the numerous sights surrounding Grand Portage. Just west of Grand Portage lies the wilderness of The Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

FWS Visitor Center

NPS Archeology Database Specialist

NPS Information Desk Assistant

Position Description
Position is located at the Keweenaw National Historical Park Information Desk located at the Quincy Mine Hoist Gift Shop. Duties include informing and orienting visitors to the park. Answer visitor questions on park facilities, Heritage Sites, cultural and natural resources, and recreational opportunities.

May also prepapre and present interpretive programs including talk and/or guided walks of historic sites located within the park.

General office duties include: answering phones, operating computers, copiers and other office equipment, and maintaining and updating information files.

Ability to work and communicate with park staff and visitors; ability to use a personal computer with Windows XP software and internet access, knowledge of park facilities and recreational opportunities preferred. Skills in customer service are required along with ability to handle large volumes of visitors in a professional and courteous manner. Knowledge of the park, heritage sites, and other park resources would be helpful.

NPS Archeological Lab Assistant

Position Description
Processing and cataloging collections. Work with the Center’s Supervisory Museum Specialist to ensure accurate and complete cataloging of archeological materials, following established guidelines. Enter cataloging data into the Automated National Catalog System (ANCS+) or its successor and the Center’s databases using established NPS and Center procedures. Unpack specimens and processes them; perform limited cleaning. Repack specimens with care, assuring complete labeling that preserves data associated with the specimens.Identify and label newly received specimens by matching field labels, notes, etc. with the new specimens. Prepare objects for storage or display. Index, document, and store newly received items. Seek assistance for situations not covered by instructions or guidelines.Organize collections in storage on shelves or in cabinets as is most appropriate for protection of the specimens and for ease of retrieval.Prepare, maintain, and organize manual and automated curatorial records including accession records, catalog records, and donation forms; maintain and organize other records, such as inventories and specimens lists. File records in accession folders and affix catalog numbers to objects. Maintain and update cataloging and indexing system.Perform routine research for catalog records, exhibits, and other purposes as assigned.Implement museum maintenance and housekeeping schedules. Perform routine cleaning of specimens as directed and according to established standards. Assist in scheduled cleaning of museum collection storage. Implement museum environmental monitoring program, including gathering data, maintaining the monitoring equipment, and preparing permanent data records. Assist with the design and installation of exhibits. Perform delicate procedures necessary for preservation and conservation of objects and specimens. Provide assistance to others who complete the Annual Inventory of Collections. Provide answers and information to visitors. Supervise, assist, and monitor all visitors to museum facility, including researchers using the collection. Use archives and museum collection to provide answers to research requests from outside researchers and from park staff. Refer unusual requests with no obvious answer to SEAC staff.

NPS Muir Woods Internship [JMAC]

Basic Information:
This internship opportunity is at Muir Woods National Monument, an old growth coast redwood forest just 17 miles north of San Francisco. Muir Woods was declared a National Monument in 1908 through the generous donation of William Kent. In 1972, Golden Gate National Recreation Area was established, with Muir Woods included within its boundaries. The main feature of the Monument is the last old growth coast redwood forest in the San Francisco Bay Area and its associated plants and animals. The park also commemorates the early history of conservation in the United States. Six miles of hiking trails in Muir Woods connect with other trails in surrounding state and national park lands. Interns also may have duties in other parts of the Redwood Creek Watershed.

Muir Woods internships are designed to provide valuable work experience, primarily in Visitor Services, Education, and Interpretation. Internships generally last a minimum of 3 months, and may continue up to one year. Weekend and shift work is required.

Description of Duties

  • Interns will be responsible for assisting park staff in a variety of visitor services, including providing formal and informal interpretive programming, staffing an information table, roving trails, answering phones, and responding to visitor inquiries.
  • Interns also provide special programming for youth groups.
  • Interns may also assist park staff in a variety of resource management services, such as non-native plant removal, nursery work, wildlife species monitoring, weather data collection, volunteer service support, and other related projects. This is a good opportunity to gain experience working in a national park.

This position is 40 hours per week. Interns receive out-of-pocket expense and a uniform to wear while on duty. Housing may be provided.

NPS Volunteer Interpreter/Guide

JOB TITLE:Perry's Victory Volunteer Interpreter/Guide

DATES:We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to stay for two months or more between MAY 1, 2008 - OCTOBER 31, 2008. Couples are welcome.

DUTIES:Duties include assisting the ranger staff in operating the memorial column providing interpretive, orientation, and safety information to visitors; staffing the visitor center, which includes greeting park visitors, providing information on cultural, historical, and natural points of interest in the area. Answers the phone, directs calls, and takes messages. Also operates the park's audio/visual system, cash register and sells park bookstore items. Volunteers may also present formal interpretive programs, participate in historic demonstrations, and assist with special events and other projects related to visitor services.

SKILLS:Ability to communicate effectively with visitors in one-on-one situations and small groups. Must be able to climb 37 stairs several times a day, endure long periods standing and walking, and work in an outdoor environment. Ability to work independently and as part of a team while handling retail sales, making change and operating a cash register.

COMPENSATION:RV site with complete hook-ups in a landscaped setting only 150 feet from Lake Erie (initial cost and final cost of bringing RV to/from the island will be reimbursed). If needed, a small stipend may also be available. Volunteer uniforms and training in all aspects of the position will be provided. Uniforms are to be worn when on duty.

AREA:Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial is located at Put-in-Bay, Ohio on South Bass Island in western Lake Erie. The only access to South Bass Island is by ferry or plane. Put-in-Bay has a permanent population of about 500, with the population swelling during the summer months. Services in Put-in-Bay include two churches (Catholic and Episcopal), an elementary and secondary school, medical clinic staffed by a paramedic, a grocery store, gas station and one bank with limited hours. Other services are located on the mainland in Port Clinton (population 7,200).

The site commemorates Oliver Hazard Perry’s victory over a British squadron during the battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813. The primary and most visible resource is the granite Memorial Column which towers 352 feet above Lake Erie. Its Greek ‘Doric’ design makes it the largest of its kind in the world, the tallest open-air observation deck in the National Park Service at 317 feet, and the only International Peace Memorial in the National Park System. An elevator provides access to the observation deck. It is not wheelchair accessible. A short interpretive talk is given in the elevator along with safety information. During the week, the ranger staff present interpretive programs; costume demonstrations are presented on the weekends along with black powder demonstrations.

A: MAJOR DUTIES: Assists office staff in the performance of a variety of word processing and clerical duties.1.Utilizing office automation hardware and software, types correspondence from rough draft, forms, and similar material. Word processing is performed in final form.

2. Assembles routine correspondence such as form letters, information requests, and transmittals of material. Prepares a variety of forms from rough draft in accordance with established formats and procedures.

3. Receives, screens, and routes mail, correspondence, and other material.

4. Maintains a variety of files: files a variety of information, correspondence, and catalogs as outlined by established filing guidelines or as instructed by administrative staff; searches for and retrieves a variety of information, correspondence, and catalogs as instructed by administrative staff.

5. Receives telephone calls and office visitors and refers them to appropriate office personnel.

6. Photocopies, collates, assembles, and staples information, correspondence and other material as instructed.

7. Access various files and documents on the internet. Print and file documents.

B: FACTORS:

1. Knowledge Required by the Position:

a: Word Processing: Knowledge of office automation software functions to edit electronic drafts, and to utilize and/or update existing data bases and program software.Knowledge of English grammar and spelling.Basic ability to access information on internet.Competitive level proficiency in typing required.

b: Clerical: Skill in the use of judgment and tact in responding to calls and visitors received in the office.Ability to learn clerical procedures in order to maintain files, assemble routine correspondence, and route a variety of material including mail, circulars, correspondence, and other information; and to identify and recognize recurring office clerical situations.Ability to operate photocopy machine.

2. Supervisory Controls:

a: Word Processing: Works under the direct supervision of the Administrative Tech. who sets priorities and work assignments. The volunteer works independently on routine work assignments. Work of a more technical nature is closely monitored by Administrative Tech. Completed work is reviewed or spot checked before leaving for compliance with instructions and procedures, completeness, appearance, accuracy, and typographical errors.

3. Guidelines: Numerous guidelines are utilized and include bureau and departmental manuals, the Correspondence Handbook, internal office procedures, and other guides. When existing guidelines are not appropriate for specific situation, the volunteer refers the matter to the Administrative Tech. or other knowledgeable staff.

4. Complexity: Performs work with varied responsibilities. Shifts frequently from one type of work to another as assignments are received. When performing clerical duties, employee must often add, date, or fill in words or figures to make documents or correspondence complete. Further complexity comes from performance of word processing functions on an IBM PC compatible computer.

5. Scope and Effect: Word Processing: The purpose of the work is to provide word processing and clerical support services. The work contributes to the efficiency of daily operations in the work setting.

6. Personal Contacts: Contacts are with park employees and with the visiting public and business concerns. Telephone contacts are with the public, NPS employees and all business callers.

7. Purpose of Contacts: The purpose is usually to receive work assignments and instructions, acquire and/or furnish information as necessary to accomplish the mission of the administrative division.

8. Physical Demand: Most work is sedentary and is performed sitting at a desk with some walking, standing, bending, and carrying light objects.

9. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office setting.

NOTE: Volunteer may be required to undergo a Background Investigation.

C: WORK SCHEDULE: The Volunteer is scheduled for 32 hours per week. Routine work week consists of 4 days, with the schedule to be agreed upon by Volunteer and Administrative staff. Weekends are not generally worked but may be scheduled if desired by volunteer. Government holidays are not worked.Workday consists of 8 hours per day, from 7:30am to 4:00pm. Occasionally the Volunteer may be requested to work other shift hours, between 6:00am and 12:00 midnight, to assist with special projects.

D: LENGTH OF SEASON: The Volunteer would work between May and September. Actual length of appointment will be determined between Volunteer and park at time of selection.

E: REIMBURSEMENT: $7.00/working day for volunteer performing identified duties of a position.

F: WORK UNIFORM: The Volunteer will be required to wear the designated uniform items. Uniform items consist of hats, shirts, and pants. The park will provide uniform hats and shirts. Brown or khaki pants will be purchased by the volunteer and reimbursed by the park for actual purchase price up to $60.00.

G: RV SITE: The park has a limited number of graveled RV sites available with hookups for water, sewer, electrical (50amp/220v and 30amp/220v receptacles). Sites come with picnic table, and shade trees.

Mall Operations: Volunteers work at one of the sites located within the National Mall & Memorial Parks, answering questions and directing visitors around the city: At the Washington Monument, volunteers assist the staff in managing ticket lines, operate the elevator, and/or present interpretive programs down the monument steps. At the Survey Lodge Ranger Station, volunteers assist the volunteer coordinator with office administration and/or staff the information desk. At Lincoln, FDR, and Thomas Jefferson Memorials, volunteers present interpretive programs. At the Korean War Veterans, Vietnam Veterans and World War II Memorials volunteers answer the phone, answer questions about the memorial and surrounding area, direct visitors around the city, present interpretive programs and assist visitors in locating names on the Honor Roll and/or on the memorial. Volunteers may also drive the Information Cart on the Mall and may conduct other tours as required including, but not limited to, Mall Walking tours and Cherry Blossom talks. At all sites, volunteers assist Park Rangers in the protection of resources. During special events, e.g. Veterans Day and Memorial Day, volunteers may assist in duties as directed by the National Park Service staff.
