FS Guard Station Host

Location: Kooskia, ID 83539
Position Description
Volunteer hosts are needed for the historic Moose Creek Ranger Station and the Shearer Guard Station, both located deep within the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. Duties include visitor contact and information, light facililities and campground maintenance, and recording daily landings at nearby airstrips. Both sites are accessed by either foot, stock, or airplane. There is no road access. A minimum stay of one month is required; longer is preferred. Accomodation available in rustic log cabins on-site.

NPS Caretaker
Petrified Forest National Park (Petrified Forest, AZ)

Position Description
The Painted Desert Inn National Historic Landmark was registered with the land office as an inn in 1924. It has a rich history covering early tourist travel by railroad and Route 66, remodel of the Inn by architect Lyle Bennett with work done by the Civilian Conservation Corps, concession operations with the Fred Harvey Company and the Harvey Girls with interior design renovations by Mary Colter and renowned Hobie artist Fred Kabotie. Between 2004 and 2006 the building had some “modernizing” work. The park is trying to maintain the historical integrity of the building to for the enjoyment of future generations. The caretaker duties would be general house cleaning, working with resource management for minor building repairs and outside landscape maintenance. While the position is not directly responsible to interact with the public, the person in this position would by nature of being visible by the public need to interact with the public on a small scale. The caretaker will be provided interpretive training to gain the knowledge and skill to interact with the public and present the historical significance of the Inn.

VALLEY FORGE, PA. – On Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, more than an estimated 100,000 volunteers across the country will roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty helping to improve the nation’s parks, forests, rivers, lakes and wetlands during the largest annual, single-day volunteer restoration effort for America’s public lands.

Valley Forge National Historical Park, the site of the Continental Army’s encampment during the winter of 1777-78 is inviting area residents, businesses, corporations, universities youth organizations and schools to lend a hand and support your local National Park during the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance public lands.

NPS Valley Forge Maintenance Worker
Valley Forge National Historical Park (King of Prussia, PA)
Location: King of Prussia, PA 19406
Position Description
The Valley Forge Volunteer Maintenance Worker will be responsible for driving and operating vehicles with a gross vehicle weigh (GVW) of 16,000 or less such as small dump trucks, flat bed trucks, pick up trucks and utility vehicles to haul equipment, supplies, materials and personel to, from, and around job sites. The worker will make a walk-around safety inspection before using vehicles or equipment and will perform routine operator maintenance, including checking fluid levels, belts, hoses, filters, tires, brakes, lights, and required safety devices. Responsibilities also include the operation of various power tools such as chain saws, weed eaters, blowers, chippers, lawn mowers, vacuums, generators, sprayers and various hand tools. Volunteers will perform manual labor on maintenance, construction, alteration and repair work on park resources, historical and non-historical. Typical manual work would include raking, sweeping, shoveling digging, weed trimming, pruning and picking up debris such as limbs and trash on park gounds. Individual work schedules will be coordinated with the Supervisor of the Landscapes and Roads Unit of the Valley Forge NHP Maintenance Division.

NPS Valley Forge Monthly Trails Cleanup
Valley Forge National Historical Park (King of Prussia, PA)

Position Description
The second Saturday of each month (March through December) volunteers can help clean up and maintain trails in Valley Forge NHP.

Come join us and help preserve and protect both the cultural and natural resources of the park.

The work requires occasional effort in lifting heavy materials. Protective gear is important and must be worn. Valley Forge NHP will provide tools. Meet at 9am in the small parking lot off Yellow Springs Road (near the covered bridge). Work ends by noon.

FWS Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge

Position Description
Big Branch Marsh NWR is a remnant of the beatiful coastline and inland forests of Lake Pontchartrain. 15,000 acres of marsh, bayou, and piney woods allow for great diversity on this property. Volunteers help with all sorts of tasks. Grounds works on our headquarters which used to be a commercial garden. Biological work with bald eagles, red-cockaded woodpeckers, waterfowl and more. Education work with area students where we teach them the importance of protected places and why we use fire as a management tool.We have campsites available for work campers as well.

NPS San Francisco Maritime NHP

Help the shipwrights maintain and restore the ships at Hyde Street Pier. Most, but not all of the tasks involve the preparation and painting of wood and steel surfaces. Projects for skilled carpenters require a more significant commitment, primarily on weekdays and some Saturdays. However, volunteers of ALL skill levels are very welcome and encouraged to assist staff in the essential maintenance of these historic vessels. Painters, cleaners, varnishers, rust busters, organizers, fitters, and otherwise handy folks needed 7 days a week.

Learn and practice traditional sailor’s arts and marline spike seamanship. “Worm, parcel, and serve.” Must enjoy getting dirty and the smell of stockholm tar. Learn how to lash and lift heavy loads safely from aloft and on deck. Understand that riggers also paint, chip, scrape and clean. Regular volunteers who demonstrate substantial interest, ability, and commitment may also learn more advanced techniques, such as splicing wire, and advanced ropework. Excellent training! A “must” for anyone already in, or wishing to pursue a professional career on traditional ships.

NPS San Francisco Maritime NHP

Position Description
Become a member of the sailing crew of the Scow Schooner Alma. Learn seamanship, sail handling, sailing and navigation on San Francisco Bay, and become a sailing ambassador for SF Maritime NHP. Woodworking, metalworking, painting, rigging, diesel mechanics and canvaswork are among the skills needed to keep the ship sailing. Thursdays and Saturdays are Alma’s primary volunteer days, with sails scheduled most weeks during the March - November season. Winter focus is on ship maintenance and preparations for the sailing season. No previous sailing experience required, only a willingness to learn and apply new skills. Note: Sailing as a passenger (or crew) aboard the Alma on her weekly excursions is a benefit available, (and limited to) Park volunteers in ALL departments.

Volunteers needed to perform seasonal indoor and outdoor work. Indoor work includes: assisting in visitor center, performing clerical and administrative duties, and working with computers and other technical equipment. FWS Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge

Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful example of Bottomland Hardwood Swamp. Located on the lower Pearl River, the refuge is largely inaccessible. It offers habitat for many creatures, including swallow-tailed kites, gulf sturgeon, turkey, and myriad neotropical migratory songbirds.Staff and volunteers on this refuge do a wide variety of research, and maintain trails and access points.

NPS Facilities Assistant
Pinnacles National Monument (Paicines, CA)

Position Description

Help NPS staff with the maintenance of facilities (trails, buildings, grounds, roads, fences, and utilities) throughout the park as a laborer. Assist with custodial services, picnic and campground operations, and pool operations.

Location description:

Pinnacles National Monument is centrally located within California’s natural wonders. Hours from the San Francisco Bay Area, Monterey Bay and the Pacific Ocean, Yosemite National park and more. Rising out of the chaparral-covered Gabilan Mountains, east of central California's Salinas Valley, are the spectacular remains of an ancient volcano. Massive monoliths, spires, sheer-walled canyons and talus passages define millions of years of erosion, faulting and tectonic plate movement. Knowledge and skills desired/ Requirements

·Desire and ability to work outdoors, at times in inclement weather and terrain as well as sometimes exert strenuous physical activity while walking.

·Ability to work as a laborer without more than normal supervision.

·Skill to use tools and equipment common with trade.

·Ability to perform work safely.

·Ability to move/lift up to 50 lbs.

·Ability to walk/hike 2-8 miles in prevailing weather.

·Friendly, courteous, reliable.

·You will be required to wear an official National Park Service Volunteer uniform that will be provided to you.

Scheduled Hours/Time commitment: Minimum commitment of two 6-8 hour workdays a week. Some flexibility possible, however reliability is necessary

USACE Canyon Lake Reservoir
Park Maintenance (Canyon Lake, TX)

Position Description
Park Maintenance/ Visitor Center Assistance, Available from October 1, 2008 through March 31, 2009. The Canyon Lake Volunteer Program is expanding every year. There is a high demand to volunteer at this particular lake because of its location (being in South Texas) and its beauty. A "Volunteer Village" is created in October in one of the closed sections of Potter's Creek Park. This "village" gives the volunteers a sense of community and accommodates the volunteer with 30 and 50 amp hook-ups, water, their own restroom facility, and a dump station just around the corner. Also, there are a few (6) volunteer positions available at the seasonally-closed parks. All volunteers are required to work a minimum of 20 hours per week in lieu of the camp site offered. Volunteers primary responsibilities are to provide park maintenance and up-keep at all the parks and visitor areas. There is also a need for Visitor Assistance and Administration Support at the project office. (Updated 06/17/2008)
