Network

Background and Overview—The San Francisco Bay Area Network

The Inventory and Monitoring Program and the Pacific Coast Science and Learning Center serve the National Parks of the San Francisco Bay Area Network (SFAN). The SFAN parks are within the Central California Coast Ranges and share many ecological systems and associated anthropogenic influences which include invasions of non-native species, altered fire regimes, degraded air and water quality, heavy recreational pressure, adjacent habitat loss, and climate change with associated sea level rise. The parks are extremely diverse in natural resources and have a unique set of complex management challenges within a densely populated setting. Most of the SFAN units are part of the Central California International Biosphere Reserve (Myers et al 2000), and are part of the California Floristic Province, an area recognized by Conservation International as a hotspot of biodiversity.

NOAA’s Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary sits just offshore of Point Reyes National Seashore and works to protect the unique offshore ecosystem surrounding the hidden Cordell Bank. The Sanctuary has research and monitoring programs to better understand the resources, has protective regulations, and communicates to the public through education and outreach programs. Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary is the most northern of the three contiguous National Marine Sanctuaries on our coast and is entirely offshore. www.cordellbank.noaa.gov

NPS National Public Lands Day - South Rim
Grand Canyon National Park (Grand Canyon, AZ)
Location: Grand Canyon, AZ 86023
Position Description
Come out and celebrate National Public Lands Day with Grand Canyon National Park’s Vegetation Program. Volunteers and staff will be treating invasive species on the South Rim. In addition to working side by side with you, Vegetation Program Staff will present an orientation to the Park and the area’s natural vegetation.

Invasive species removal is an important part of work for the Vegetation Program. These plants thrive on the disturbances that are constant in this busy park, and they can even invade the pristine habitats found here on the South Rim. These species are very strong competitors for the resources needed by native plants such as sunlight, water, and soil nutrients. They invade areas by choking out native plants, and creating lots of shade which prevents native seeds from sprouting.

Each year, volunteers remove hundreds of thousands of invasive plants from the park. The nasty invasive species that will be the focus of this trip include Scotch thistle, bull thistle, musk thistle, Mediterranean sage, jointed goatgrass, and foxtail barley. Foxtail barley, Scotch and musk thistles have recently arrived on the South Rim of the park, resulting in several small populations scattered in the area. This is the perfect time to target invasives species! This project will also involve surveying and removing more scattered invasive species such as Mediterranean sage and jointed goatgrass. We will be removing these plants by hand, digging and pulling them out by the roots using hand tools.

(What we will provide):

A site at Mather Campground will be provided beginning Friday evening, as well as an entrance waiver to the park. Vegetation Staff will meet volunteers on 8 AM on Saturday, September 27th 2008 at the campsite; we expect to work until 4 PM. Transportation will also be provided to work sites by the Vegetation staff.

Staff will provide lunch and snacks.

(What volunteers need to provide):

You will need to provide your own close toed shoes, hat, sunscreen, and daypack. We will have gloves, eye protection/sunglasses, and other tools on hand for you to work with. Come prepared for rain or sun.
