Mexico - Sugar Modification of HFCS MFN Import Duties
The Secretariat of Economy announced in the Diario Oficial (Federal Register) an increase in MFN import duties for HFCS. These new duties do not affect NAFTA countries or other countries with special trade agreements with Mexico.

Mexico - Sugar Announcement on U.S. HFCS Antidumping Case
The Secretariat of Economy published in the "Diario Oficial" (Federal Register) a final decision from the Binational Panel established by NAFTA on the U.S. HFCS antidumping duties case.

Mexico - Imports of U.S. Coffee Products Exceed 2001 NAFTA Safeguard
Mexico announced that the quantity of select coffee products imported from the U.S. have exceeded the safeguard quota agreed to under NAFTA. As a result, starting October 6, 2001, the tariff rate increased from 4 percent to 20 percent and will remain in effect through December 31, 2001.

Canada-Costa Rica Free Trade Agreement Legislation
Ottawa Trade Minister Pettigrew tabled in the House of Commons legislation to implement the Canada-Costa Rica FTA. The agreement includes better access for Canadian fish, paper products, auto parts, plastics, wood and agricultural goods.

Canada - Ban on U.S. Fresh Produce Promotional Logo
Effective December 1, 2001, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency will prohibit the use of the U.S. promotional logo "Eat Fruits and Vegetables - 5 A Day - For Better Health"® on prepackaged fresh produce sold in Canada.

Canada- Bulk Waivers Issued for More Than 1,000 Loads of U.S. Potatoes
In the period January 1 to May 18, 2001 the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued ministerial exemptions (bulk waivers) for 1,024 loads of fresh potatoes from the United States. According to the CFIA, of the total applications for bulk waivers during that period for U.S. potatoes, no application was denied.

Argentina - Increases Tariffs on Food Products
Argentina increased the tariffs on most high value consumer ready food products to 35 percent on April 10, 2001 as part of a new economic recovery plan. The tariffs on most fruits and vegetables were increased to 25 percent, while the tariff on cat and dog food increased to 20 percent (from 16.5 percent).

Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement Opens Market
According to Trade Minister Pettigrew, Canada and Chile are increasing their market shares and competing in new areas of non-traditional exports. Canada and Chile agreed on appropriate compensation for a safeguard measure that has been imposed on Canadian wheat. The compensation will take the form of accelerated tariff elimination on imports of Canadian French fried potatoes, dried beans and peas, and pet food.

Mexico - Announces the last Auction for Permits Import to Dry Beans
On April 30, 2001, Mexico's Secretariat of Economy (SE) announced that on June 1, 2001, it will conduct an auction of permits to import 46,120 MT of U.S. dry edible beans (HS 0713.33.99). The stated quantity represents the second and final two-thirds of the total NAFTA tariff-rate quota (TRQ) for CY 2001. The auction for the first one-third was held on March 19, 2001.
