There are many national organizations that work to reduce childhood transportation-related injuries. This list provides a brief description of some organizations you might want to contact for additional transportation safety information or materials.

AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety

The Foundation’s mission is to research why motor vehicle crashes happen and educate the public about how to avoid problems on the road. Its website provides useful information for everyone that uses the road - - pedestrians, cyclists, children, young drivers, school bus passengers, school safety patrols, and more. A variety of traffic safety materials and educational programs are available for purchase through the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “Otto the Auto” safety series and “Children in Traffic” are two products that can be found in the Materials Catalog of this Kit.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Injury Prevention Program

The American Academy of Pediatrics is an organization of 55,000 primary care pedi-atricians, pediatric medical subspecialists, and pediatric surgical specialists dedicated to the health, safety, and well-being of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. On its website, you can find transportation safety information on air bag safety, car seat safety, bicycle safety and pedestrian safety.

American Public Transportation Association (APTA) (formerly American Public Transit Association)

APTA serves and leads its diverse membership through advocacy, innovation, and information sharing to strengthen and expand public transportation. Air Bag and Seat Belt Safety Campaign

The Campaign, housed at the National Safety Council, serves as a resource center for occupant restraint and airbag safety issues. Some of the resources that can be obtained from this campaign are as follows: fact sheets, safety tips, legislation, enforcement, press releases and programs.

Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute (BHSI)

BHSI is a small, active, non-profit consumer-funded program acting as a clearinghouse and a technical resource for bicycle helmet information. Some of the information that can be obtained from BHSI pertains to helmet laws, purchasing and properly using a helmet, helmet standards, statistics, and educational materials. The BHSI website contains a page with links specifically targeting young riders. Check out the graphics, activities, interactive homework, and downloadable pictures.

Community Transportation Association of America (CTAA)

Earth Force

Earth Force is youth for a change! Through Earth Force, youth discover and implement lasting solutions to environmental issues in their community. Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation

The mission of the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation is to educate the public on the safe and proper use of elevators, escalators and moving walks. The Foundation developed “SAFE-T RIDER,” a program to teach young children safety rules for riding on elevators, escalators and moving sidewalks. Emergency Medical Services for Children

Emergency Medical Services for Children is a national initiative designed to reduce child and youth disability and death due to severe illness or injury. On the EMSC website, you will find excellent links for a variety of transportation issues, such as pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, motor vehicles, impaired driving, and child safety seats.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

FAA’s mission is to ensure the safe and efficient use of the Nation’s airspace; to foster civil aeronautics and air commerce in the United States and abroad; and to support the requirements of national defense. Be sure to visit the Kids Zone at the FAA website and learn about aviation. Teachers can find many guides and curriculums to help teach children about air travel. There are also various activities, such as coloring books, word puzzles, and experiments that are perfect for the classroom.

Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)

FHWA provides proactive leadership, expertise, resources and information to continually improve the quality of our Nation’s highway system and its intermodal connections. FHWA offers numerous resources in the areas of pedestrian and bicycle safety. The FHWA web page contains educational information for students, teachers and parents. Search for transportation-related activities, lessons, homework ideas and work sheets to be used at the kindergarten, elementary, middle and high school levels.

Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)

FRA has responsibility for ensuring railroad safety throughout the Nation and to monitor railroad compliance with federally mandated safety standards. FRA provides “Railroad Curriculum,” a program designed to help students K-12 learn about trains and railroading. The program provides teachers with a ready-made kit (introduction, activities, assessment) to teach and entertain even the youngest children about railroads. In addition to the curriculum, lesson plans, quizzes, word problems, presentation aids and a railroad library are all available through the FRA.

Federal Support to Communities Initiative

The Federal Support to Community Initiative sponsors a new website for after-school programs. Visit the website to obtain information about Federal resources on education programs, funding, nutrition, student health and safety issues, mentors, and other safe information for kids and teen. On its website you can learn how to host an After-School Resource fair and link your community after-school website to a national network.

Federal Transit Administration (FTA)

FTA provides financial and technical assistance to the local transit systems. FTA has an interactive educational website entitled Transit City U.S.A. This mythical American city provides a variety of educational resources for students of all ages and teachers alike. Gather information and learn about subways, city buses, railroads, and even bicycles. You may also want to visit the elementary school campus, middle school campus, and high school campus, all designed to provide transit-related information for each group.

Garrett A. Morgan Technology and Transportation Futures Program

Insurance Institute For Highway Safety (IIHS)

An independent, non-profit, research and communications organization dedicated to reducing highway crash deaths, injuries and property damage losses. IIHS conducts and publishes research on a wide range of highway safety topics. The IIHS web page provides information on airbags, alcohol and drugs, bicycles, motorcycles, pedestrians, passenger vehicles, safety belt use, speed, teenagers, state laws and fatality facts.

League of American Bicyclists

Promotes cycling for fun, fitness, and transportation, and works through advocacy and education for a bicycle friendly America. Learn about national, state and local bicycle advocacy, the bicycle friendly communities program and National Bike Month by contacting the League of American Bicyclists. The League also has a bicycle program, Effective Cycling, that teaches cyclists important bike handling and safety skills to ensure safer and more enjoyable rides. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)

MADD is an organization of moms, dads, young people, and other individuals trying to make a difference. This group is determined to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime, and prevent underage drinking. You can purchase a variety of materials such as books, brochures, how-to manuals and professional teaching aids. MADD also offers fact sheets for teens, youth related statistics, and a coloring book for elementary students right off the Internet.

Maritime Administration (MARAD)

MARAD’s overall mission is to promote the development and maintenance of an adequate, well-balanced, United States merchant marine, sufficient to carry the Nation’s domestic waterborne commerce and a substantial portion of its waterborne foreign commerce, and capable of serving as a naval and military auxiliary in time of war or national emergency. National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT)

An organization of pupil transportation professionals dedicated to promoting safety and enhancing efficiency in pupil transportation. Individuals in the transportation industry can find information about pupil transportation at this website. This is also a good resource to contact if you have school bus related questions. National Association of Governors’ Highway Safety Representatives (NAGHSR)

The governors’ highway safety representatives manage each state’s highway safety program and serve as liaisons between their governors and the highway safety community. They also work closely with NHTSA in the administration of federal highway safety grant programs. NAGHSR’s website is an excellent source of information providing countless links to highway safety-related online resources. The site also lists all State Highway Safety Offices. National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS)

NASDPTS provides leadership, assistance, and motivation to the nation’s school transportation industry to provide high-quality, safe, and efficient transportation for pupils. The association works with many organizations at the federal, state and national levels that have an interest in pupil transportation. Each “State Director” is responsible for state policies concerning pupil transportation and can provide information about their state’s pupil transportation program.

National Bicycle Safety Network (NBSN)

A coalition of public and private organizations and agencies who work together to increase safe bicycle use and strive to reduce the number of bicycle injuries by promoting bicycle safety. Information on bicycle safety programs, bicycle helmets, education, legislation, research and grants can be found by visiting the NBSN website. National Center For Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC)

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

NHTSA’s mission is to save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce traffic-related health care and other economic costs. NHTSA offers information and materials on school bus safety, bicycle, pedestrian, motorcycle, motor vehicle and child passenger safety issues. Parents, teachers and students will want to visit NHTSA’s website, especially “Safety City,” a bright, colorful, interactive page designed to entertain and teach children about highway safety. National Organization for Youth Safety (NOYS)

NOYS is a collaboration of over 40 national, youth-serving organizations, including nonprofit organizations and government agencies, with the common goal of promoting safe and healthy behaviors among our nation’s youth. The National Safe Kids Campaign

State and local SAFE KIDS Coalitions are active in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. SAFE KIDS provides information and materials educating adults and children to prevent the number one killer of children - unintentional injury. They empower families and communities to protect children 14 and under. National Safety Belt Coalition

The National Safety Council’s National Safety Belt Coalition is a network of organizations and individuals that promote the lifesaving benefits of correctly used safety belts and child safety seats. The Coalition’s materials, activities and programs focus on the importance of correct use and effective occupant protection laws. National Safety Council (NSC)

The mission of the National Safety Council is “to educate and influence society to adopt safety, health and environmental policies, practices and procedures that prevent and mitigate human suffering and economic losses arising from preventable causes.” At the NSC website you can find information on the Air Bag & Seat Belt Safety Campaign and Walk Our Children to School Day. National School Transportation Association (NSTA)

A national organization serving as the trade organization for school bus contractors, which are companies that own and operate school buses and contract with school districts to provide pupil transportation service. This resource provides safety information on the ABC’s of School Busing, loading zone statistics, a school bus safety guide, and extensive information about National School Bus Safety Week. Learn what School Bus Safety Week is, its history, how you can participate, and how your students can enter this year’s poster contest and win prizes.

Operation Lifesaver Inc.

Operation Lifesaver is a nationwide, non-profit public information program dedicated to reducing collisions, injuries, and fatalities at highway-rail grade crossings as well as discouraging trespassing on tracks and trestles. Operation Lifesaver provides highway/ rail facts, statistics, safety tips and educational materials. Educational materials are available for specific groups, including: children grades K-4; middle school; young people ages 13-17 years old; driver education classes; the general public; school bus drivers; school administrators; and law enforcement. Remove Intoxicated Drivers (RID)

RID’s mission is to deter impaired driving and teen binge drinking that often can lead to intense trauma for all

concerned. RID advocates for victims, enables tough laws, and supports law enforcement and adjudication in the courts. RID educates the public about the impact of abusive alcohol use on life and health by distributing materials, conducting public awareness campaigns, and engaging in media interactions. Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)

SADD’s mission is to provide students with the best prevention and intervention tools possible to deal with the serious issues young adults are facing today. Safe Communities

Safe USA

Safe USA is a partnership of public and private organizations that have joined in an effort to create better ways to work together and target those who do not have access to effective injury prevention interventions. On the website you will find many links to resources on how to be “safe on the move” and “safe at school,” while using various modes of transportation, such as bicycles, cars, buses, motorcycles, and walking. There is a section of teacher materials on the website that will provide ideas for different programs and activities that can be used easily in the classroom.

School Bus Information Council

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)

CPSC is an independent Federal regulatory agency. It helps keep American families safe by reducing the risk of injury or death from consumer products. The CPSC is responsible for the regulation and recall of unsafe consumer products. When visiting the CPSC website be sure to check their kids page “The Further Adventures of Kidd Safety.” It includes games and information on bicycling, inline skating and skateboarding.

U.S. Coast Guard

The U.S. Coast Guard is at work around the clock, 365 days a year, patrolling shores, saving lives, protecting property and enhancing the flow of commerce. They help the victims of floods and storms, keep millions of dollars worth of illegal drugs from ülooding American communities, teach boating safety, and clean up oil spills. The U.S. Coast Guard has a website just for kids Ð “Kids Corner” Ð where kids can learn about boat and water safety. You can download coloring books, projects, and games from this site.
