FS Boise Basin Interpretive Assn (BBIA) Host

Position Description
Boise Basin Interpretive Association (BBIA) Visitor Center Host: We are seeking a volunteers to help out at the Interpretive Center in the Historical mining town of Idaho City. This position could be either during the summer’s months or all year long or split into 2 positions of one in the summer and one in the winter. RV hookups are available

Idaho City is about 36 miles from Idaho's state capital city of Boise. It is a beautiful drive up the canyon into the mountain town. The town is historical and gets many visitors for both the history and for the varied recreational opportunities.

The summer months have visitors looking for campgrounds, fishing, horseback riding, hiking and ATV/motorcycle riding. The winter months have visitors getting firewood, hunting, and snowmobile activities.

The visitor center duties would include receptionist duties at the visitor center, answering phones, meeting the public, providing information, selling specialty items such as Smokey bear items, and keeping records of sales. The Host volunteer would be also a source of information for the community, history, recreational opportunities etc. It could also include guiding interpretive walks in the community for visitors. The Forest Service is in partnership with the BBIA and could provide a trailer pad and space for the volunteer host at the local the FS compound.

This is an excellent chance for someone to come spend some time in historic Idaho City. There are many recreational activities available in the area and spectacular country to see. The volunteer could spend their days off recreating is a beautiful and diverse place.

FS Dispersed Recreation/OHV Patrol

Position Description
Dispersed Recreation/OHV Patrol: Assignments may be available at the Kemmerer or Big Piney Ranger Districts.

Each Dispersed Recreation/OHV Patrol volunteer would work directly with a Forest Protection Officer, as a two person team, patrolling Forest roads and trails by vehicle or ATV’s on Kemmerer and / or Big Piney Ranger Districts. Duties could include: monitoring and collecting data on OHV and dispersed recreational use and impacts; providing visitor information, especially pertaining to Off Highway Vehicles (OHV's); signing trails/roads and restricted areas; constructing and installing closure devices on roads and user created trails; interpreting rules and regulations; checking woodcutting permits; documenting violations; performing routine cleaning and maintenance of dispersed campsites; removal of hazards from roads and trails; and litter pick-up.

Individuals with outgoing personality and ATV and hiking experience are preferred. Certification on ATV’s through a rider safety course is required if using ATV’s, training will be provided. Position requires driver’s license and the ability to work independently and with others. These positions are dependent upon the ability to hire Forest Protection Officers through State Grant Funding and the ability to work out housing arrangements. Housing opportunities are limited; but government housing may be available. Other arrangements may be possible for those with self contained camping units. Subsistence and/or incidental expenses negotiable upon availability of funds and housing. A uniform, radio and necessary tools and supplies will be provided.

FS Wilderness Ranger

Position Description
Wilderness Ranger: Wilderness Ranger needed for Pine Valley Mountain wilderness. Located in southwest Utah approximately 35 miles from St. George. Volunteer would perform wilderness patrols, make visitor contacts, provide visitor information, and teach Leave No Trace skills and ethics. Volunteer may staff a mobile information station to provide wilderness information to visitors.

Will be required to camp alone in wilderness. Trails are steep and arduous. Top physical fitness required. Horse experience helpful.

Visitor Center Attendant: Volunteers assist with staffing the Wildcat Information Center located on Boulder Mountain – Hwy 12. FS Visitor Center Assistant

VISITOR CENTER ASSISTANT

WORK TO INCLUDE:

Receptionist-type work in providing various forms of information/interpretation of Forest use policies and regulations in conjunction with state laws to Forest visitors utilizing Forest system lands and facilities on the Heber Ranger District.

Being actively and enthusiastically involved in our frequent interpretive programs at the Strawberry Bay Amphitheater using many individuals and agencies for a myriad of subject matter for entertainment and education of our Forest visitors.

Light custodial duties including, but not limited to, the following: vacuuming, removing and replacing trash liners, washing windows, re-stocking of supplies and physical cleaning maintenance of public restrooms, replacing light bulbs, dusting, etc. etc.

Inventory and ordering of bookstore materials. This work is mainly cash register use and completion of deposit forms directly related to the sales of bookstore items at the Visitor’s Center weekly.

Boardwalk maintenance: The Visitor’s Center interpretive program utilizes a boardwalk system which comprises of about 1500 of boardwalk trail in riparian zones immediately adjacent to the V.C. The boardwalk system will need from time-to-time, incidental clean-up, repairs, and maintenance. One such duty may include treating the boardwalk with linseed for example.

Landscaping: The arena of landscaping in Strawberry is fairly mundane, because of the altitude and temperature, the grass needs mowed only about twice a month with a ride-on-mower and use of a weed trimmer around concrete edges such as sidewalks and curbs.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Volunteers should anticipate working under the above mentioned conditions 4 days per week. Work days will usually consist of a minimum of 4 hours, and not exceed 8 hours.

PROVIDED FOR THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM:

The Heber Ranger District will, in the form of a reimbursement for incidental expenses accrued by the volunteer, offer a space for residential purposes with full hook-ups complete with power, water, and sewer. An occasional refueling of propane cylinders will also be provided by the Heber Ranger District. Additionally with these reimbursements, a government owned vehicle (contingent on availability) and fuel provided may be obtained at the Strawberry warehouse for the carrying-out of official tasks and duties only. Also in addition, when situations permit, the Heber Ranger District may provide housing close to the duty station.

WORK SEASON:

The work season will begin in May (at least 2 weeks prior to Memorial Day weekend) and carry through when possible to the 2nd week in October. Our busiest time is September for the annual spawning of the Kokanee Salmon. Many school and public-related tours are given through this time period.

FS Campground Host

Campground Host: Shafer Butte Campground is located 20 miles north of Boise, near the Bogus Basin Ski area. Elevation is 6,800 feet. The area offers a more remote location for the adventurous volunteer.

The Host responsibilities include general clean up and minor maintenance of 14 camping units; 2-days use group areas and assistance with posting of reservations and collection of visitor statistics. Electricity is not available. Propane, sewer, water, radio, tools and supplies are provided. Subsistence is provided. Volunteer furnishes own self contained trailer. Trailer space is limited to a 20 foot RV.

As a Campground Host, you will typically be expected to greet campers; give directions, answer questions, and hand out pamphlets if available; help campers feel at home; perform minor maintenance and inspect the campground; possibly clean and/or stock restrooms; keep some records; and occasionally fill out forms. A Host must work well with people, be personable and neat in appearance. You may be required to be on-site five days per week, especially on weekends and heavy use holidays. A Host must generally be physically able to perform some raking, shoveling and sweeping. The most important job as a Campground Host is to provide an enjoyable camping experience for the public. The Host is the first and sometimes the only contact with campground users.

FS Campground Host

Campground Host: Trinity Mountain Campgrounds are located 80 miles from Mountain Home and are 8,500 feet in elevation. Each campground offers a cirque lake with steep, rugged granite headwalls. Vegetation is a combination of wildflowers and grass scattered among dense stands of lodgepole pine. Rainbow and cutthroat trout can be found in each lake. A variety of wildlife species can be found, such as black bear, mule deer, elk, and blue grouse. And for the avid birdwatcher, the area hosts a large variety of birds.

Volunteer will work 4-5 days a week. Forest Service will provide rustic one-room cabin for lodging. Job will include general cleanup, minor maintenance of facilities in 3 campground areas (33 total units) and one day-use area, monitoring of one rental cabin, along with providing information and assistance to campground visitors.

As a Campground Host, you will typically be expected to greet campers; give directions, answer questions, and hand out pamphlets if available; help campers feel at home; perform minor maintenance and inspect the campground; possibly clean and/or stock restrooms; keep some records; and occasionally fill out forms. A Host must work well with people, be personable and neat in appearance. You may be required to be on-site five days per week, especially on weekends and heavy use holidays. A Host must generally be physically able to perform some raking, shoveling and sweeping. The most important job as a Campground Host is to provide an enjoyable camping experience for the public. The Host is the first and sometimes the only contact with campground users.

A Host must generally be physically able to perform some raking, shoveling and sweeping. The most important job as a Campground Host is to provide an enjoyable camping experience for the public. FS Campground Host

Position Description
Campground Host: Middle Fork Boise River campgrounds are located 31 miles from Boise; 11 miles of travel are over a narrow gravel road, of which travels along the edge of Arrowrock Reservoir. The road is designed for 2-way travel. The nearest store and gasoline service are located in Boise. The campground host is asked to assist with care and maintenance of 5 campgrounds (22 total units), and monitoring of three rental cabins located within the Cottonwood Ranger Station. The campground host is also asked to assist with monitoring rental cabin use and to perform any light clean-up and maintenance as needed. An important function of the Host is to provide information and assistance to campground and cabin visitors. District personnel will handle routine law enforcement, and cabin rental fees are collected through the National Reservation system. The host is provided with a radio to maintain contact with the District personnel.

The Lucky Peak Heli-base and Lucky Peak Nursery are located approximately 16 miles from the Cottonwood Ranger Station. A County Sheriff is located in Idaho City. Forest Service Law Enforcement is also staffed in Boise. After hour’s emergency support is provided through radio assistance from staffed lookouts, District Law Enforcement or Boise County Sheriff. Cellular phone service is spotty within the area. The best known area for using a cell phone is near the Lucky Peak Heli-base.

The host will be stationed at the Cottonwood Ranger Station. The Forest Service will provide: Propane, sewer, water and RV parking, electricity is provided by generator and is limited to a few hours each day. Subsistence and mileage reimbursement are available. Volunteer is asked to furnish own self-contained trailer.

Weekends receive peak use in the campgrounds and cabins. Schedules are designed to ensure assistance to Forest Visitors during peak use; an average week will be 4-5 days. The scheduled beginning date for the Host is May 15. The average closure date for the campgrounds is October 1.

FS Wilderness Ranger

Position Description
Wilderness Ranger: Volunteer Wilderness Rangers needed in the Ely Ranger District. Hike, backpack, and camp in the wilderness for extended periods. Need to be a self-starter; must be comfortable living and working alone. Must be personable and able to explain rules, regulations, and leave no trace concepts. Will perform basic trail maintenance, campsite cleanup and monitoring, pick up litter, and probably have the best summer of your life. Internships are encouraged. The Forest Service will supply uniforms, supplies, and subsistence. Housing may be available.

FS Campground Host
Humboldt-Toiyabe NF (Ely, NV)

Position Description
Campground Host: Positions are located at Timber Creek and Ward Mountain Campgrounds. Volunteers can work 1-2 months within this timeframe.

As a Campground Host, you will typically be expected to greet campers; give directions, answer questions, and hand out pamphlets if available; help campers feel at home; perform minor maintenance and inspect the campground; possibly clean and/or stock restrooms; keep some records; and occasionally fill out forms. A Host must work well with people, be personable and neat in appearance. You may be required to be on-site five days per week, especially on weekends and heavy use holidays. A Host must generally be physically able to perform some raking, shoveling and sweeping. The most important job as a Campground Host is to provide an enjoyable camping experience for the public. The Host is the first and sometimes the only contact with campground users.

A campsite will be provided. Must have own trailer. No electricity. Water and sewer provided.
