This catalog is a comprehensive list of all Smithsonian publications that have been recorded on audio tape as of April 1, 2000 by the Accessibility Program. The catalog is organized alphabetically by museum or unit. Publications are listed under the museum or unit that produced them. The catalog will be updated quarterly.
These tapes are available to visitors who cannot read standard print due to blindness, low vision, mobility limitations, or cognitive disabilities. Recordings are on 2-track audio cassette and where appropriate, tapes are tone indexed. Unless otherwise noted, publications are recorded on either one 60-minute or 90-minute tape. For publications that are recorded on more than one tape, the numbers of cassettes will be noted next to the publication. Additionally, the type of publication (e.g. calendar, general museum brochure, etc.) is identified in parenthesis next to the publication name.
Although the Accessibility Program primarily records publications that are free to the public, we are recording some publications (Smithsonian Magazine, Zoogoer, Wildlife Adventures, and The Associate) that are available only to members of the Smithsonian or its associate organizations. Membership fees vary. The member will receive the standard format as well as the tape(s). Refer to publication entry in this catalog for membership information.
Additionally, several exhibition catalogs and programs that are for sale have been recorded. The cost will be noted next to the publication, and the purchaser will receive the standard format as well as the tape(s).
To request tape(s), contact the Accessibility Program at the address, phone, fax, or e-mail above. The Accessibility Program will process the request through the individual museum or unit. Allow at least 2 weeks to receive tape(s), once the request is received.
You may also contact the Accessibility Program to request taping of a particular Smithsonian publication that is not on this list. Processing and delivery time will vary depending on the type and length of publication requested.
