Defeating an Ancient Killer
The Seattle Times published an op-ed written by Rear Adm. Tim Ziemer, U.S. Malaria Coordinator, and Michel Kazatchkine, Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The article focuses on a new report by UNICEF that offers a ray of hope in the progress being made in the fight against malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Gates Foundation Malaria Forum
Rear Adm. Tim Ziemer and other senior PMI officals attended the three-day Gates Foundation Malaria Forum in Seattle on October 16-18, 2007. The forum brought together scientists, policy makers and advocates for an action-oriented meeting on the future of malaria control. The First Malaria Communities Program (MCP) Grants Announced
As part of PMI, the Malaria Communities Program (MCP) will help extend the coverage of malaria prevention and control activities in communities most affected by malaria, with special attention to children under age five years and pregnant women. MCP focuses on assisting communities and indigenous organizations that are new to partnering with the U.S. Government in their efforts to combat malaria in Africa. The first five MCP grant recipients and information on their proposed program activities have been announced:

Three New Contracts and Agreements Under the PMI
Three health programs seek to improve regional malaria prevention and control in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar by focusing on increasing ownership and use of long-lasting insecticide nets (LLINs), conducting indoor residual spraying (IRS), and extending the Tanzania National Voucher Scheme. Helping to Bring Effective Malaria Medicines to Angola
The Government of Angola declared an artemisinin-containing combination treatment (ACT), Coartem®, as its first-line malaria treatment because of the high levels of resistance to traditional antimalarial monotherapies. However, Angola faced several challenges in getting the new medicines into its health facilities.

Updated PMI Fast Facts
During the Initiative's second year alone an estimated 10 million people have been reached with lifesaving prevention or treatment services from PMI and an estimated 30 million people are expected to be reached with fiscal year 2007 and 2008 funds.
