Annie E. Casey Innovations Award in Children and Family System Reform
Missouri’s Division of Youth Services has been named the 2008 award winner and will receive $100,000 toward replication and dissemination of its program around the country. The program, noted for its approach in the treatment of juvenile offenders across 42 locations statewide, was highlighted in the Casey Foundation’s 2008 KIDS COUNT Data Book essay for its comprehensive approach to reform and its network of regional facilities that keeps youth close to their families. The Innovations Program is recognized as a catalyst for transforming creative and effective ideas into best practices through the nation and around the world. The awards program is administered by the Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard Kennedy School. The Casey Foundation has funded this system reform award since 2006.

The Contributions of Immigrant Workers to Maryland's Economy
Just in time for Labor Day, this new Annie E. Casey Foundation-funded report explores the contributions of immigrants to the workforce of the Foundation’s home state of Maryland. Many of Maryland’s immigrant workers are highly educated and work in key skilled industries, however a large number are challenged by low educational attainment and a lack of English proficiency. The report recommends investing in education and training for a large number of immigrants and native-born workers to help the state remain competitive in the 21st century.

The KIDS COUNT analysis of the data shows that there continues to be wide variation in child poverty rates across the states.
