USGS Scientist Dr. Howard Ginsberg was recently appointed to the Governor's Commission on Lyme Disease and other Tick-borne Infections for the State of Rhode Island, by Governor Lincoln Almond. The appointment was made as a result of Dr Ginsberg's expertise in Epidemiology and Public Health. Dr Ginsberg is currently engaged in research on transmission dynamics of Lyme disease spirochetes between ticks and vertebrate hosts, and on the epizootiology of mosquito-transmitted West Nile Virus.

Ellis, Olsen and Kendall Serve as Editors on Volume Documenting North American Crane Research

At the close of 2001, a volume documenting crane research in North America for the last few years was published by the North American Crane Working Group with a Patuxent scientist, Dr. David H. Ellis, as chief editor. Two other Patuxent scientists, Drs. Glenn Olsen and William Kendall, served as Associate Editors. Patuxent authors contributed to 20 of the 46 papers in the volume. Most importantly, the volume documents a dozen reintroduction experiments including Patuxent scientists. Most of these involved motorized vehicles to lead the cranes.

Bocetti and Pattee Attend Delmarva Fox Squirrel Recovery Team Meeting: Provide Update on Research

Dr. Carol I. Bocetti and Dr. Oliver H. Pattee attended the Delmarva Fox Squirrel Recovery Team meeting at the Blackwater Unit of the Chesapeake Marshlands National Wildlife Refuge Complex on February 12 and 13, 2002. Dr. Bocetti presented an update on their research at the refuge and adjacent forest demonstration area, providing data collected during 2001. The Patuxent scientists are currently studying the endangered species’ response to a clear-cut with reserves. The final year of data collection will be 2002. The scientists will then provide the Recovery Team and managing agencies with much needed information on Delmarva fox squirrel density, survivorship, and response to this alternative forest management practice. Dr. Bocetti also provided the Recovery Team with an update on the development of a new research project that will investigate the Delmarva fox squirrel’s response to hazard fuel reduction fires. Both Dr. Bocetti and Dr. Pattee also provided expert opinion on other Recovery Team agenda items.
