Patuxent Wildlife Festival & Anniversary Celebration

This outdoor event is held in conjunction with the Annual Patuxent Wildlife Festival, an occasion for both the US Geological Survey and US Fish and Wildlife Service to display and celebrate their science contributions to wildlife conservation. This year we are happy to commemorate the 125th USGS Anniversary, the 65th Anniversary of the Patuxent Research Refuge and the 10th Anniversary of the National Wildlife Visitor Center. The theme of the day is “Research for Conservation: Past, Present, and Future.” Special Exhibits will display our history, science, and efforts to support the environment and wildlife conservation. Festivities will be held at the National Wildlife Visitor Center and the normally restricted Research complex in Laurel, Maryland. Exhibits will include live animals, research displays, behind-the-scenes research tours, live demonstrations, tram tours, children’s crafts and much more.

Seginak of Athens, GA Field Station to Receive the Unsung Hero Award

John Seginak, a Biological Science Technician at the Athens, Georgia Field Station of PWRC will be receiving the Unsung Hero Award. The citation explains that he is “a role model of attitude, willingness and attention to detail for younger technicians and students, many of whom have gone forward to pursue careers in wildlife and conservation”. John has fostered environmental conservation with students at the University of Georgia through many seminars, presentations, demonstrations, student activities over the past 13 years. He coaches students in preparation for the Southeastern Wildlife Conclave competition in Quiz Bowl. For the past 8 years he has contributed his time through lectures and in-field demonstration that focuses on habitat conservation and wildlife management. Through the past 4 years John has provided telemetry demonstrations to children during their Annual Family day. He personally seeks donations of stuffed animals from vendors and scatters them throughout a wooded field area. Using telemetry equipment, the kids learn how to track and find the animals, and getting to keep all they locate. The USGS considers itself fortunate to have employees with this dedication.

USGS/PWRC Biological Survey Unit Assists with Smithsonian Open House

Claudia Angle and Suzanne Peurach (USGS/PWRC Biological Survey Unit) gave their assistance on September 17, 2004, for an open house reception of the Smithsonian Institution’s Feather Identification Laboratory at the National Museum of Natural History. A reception was held in conjunction with the annual Bird Strike Committee USA/Canada meetings in Baltimore. More than 120 guests were expected representing many different government agencies as well as NGO’s from around the world, including the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and representatives from civilian airports worldwide. The reception focused on communicating some of the applications of research collections to different agencies. Specimen preparation and identification techniques for bird/mammal remains were demonstrated, as well as tours of bird and mammal research collections. Posters, reprints and specimens resulting from strikes with aircraft were displayed.
