Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership - Maryland Public Television Interview

Maryland Public Television (MPT) was at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center on May 19th and June 8th. They were filming footage for an 8-minute segment on the program Maryland Outdoors. MPT produced a feature on the Patuxent crane Program around 10 years ago; the current project is an updated feature that focuses on the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP) project. On the 19th they took footage of baby cranes, staff members working with eggs, incubators, chicks, adult cranes in their pens, ultralight aircraft and other footage. On the 8th, MPT took some footage of WCEP birds training with the ultralight aircraft, more staff footage and interviewed staff members including Dr. John French. The MPT staff was very professional, cooperative, friendly and very enthusiastic about Patuxent and the crane project. It is not certain when the completed program will be aired, (possibly not until migration is completed in December) but they will let us know the date and provide us with a cassette of the program.

"60 Minutes II" Television Program Highlights Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership Work at Patuxent

On June 22nd, the 60 Minutes II television program crew came to Patuxent to film part of a story about the WCEP project to restore an eastern migratory flock of whooping cranes. First, they filmed an interview at the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) National Wildlife Visitor’s Center with Joe Duff of Operation Migration. Then, the cameras moved over to the crane complex behind Gate 7 to film in the crane pens where whoopers could be seen in the background. Interviews continued (Charlie Rose was the interviewer) with Joe Duff and along with Dr. Glenn Olsen who represented Patuxent. Also, they filmed crane crew member Barbara Niccolai in a crane costume. The 60 Minutes II crew plans to return in August to interview Dr. John French. The Patuxent footage will be part of an extensive piece of the entire WCEP project. This will be an upbeat story on the recovery of whooping cranes, which will be shown sometime after fall migration is completed.
