You are Virginia Corps if you: mentor a child; help a neighbor prepare a disaster plan; care for a stray animal; deliver a meal to someone in need. If you share your time, if you share your skills, if you share your knowledge -- you are Virginia CORPS. Learn more.
News and notes
September is National Preparedness Month
Throughout the month, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the American Red Cross and National Preparedness Month Coalition Members encourage Americans to prepare for emergencies by putting together an emergency supply kit and a family emergency plan, becoming informed about threats, and participating in community preparation.
So get a kit, make a plan, be informed and get involved. Make sure your family is prepared ... then volunteer to help spread the word to businesses, schools and homes in your community. Find out more by checking the National Preparedness Month page or by visiting www.ReadyVirginia.gov or www.ListoVirginia.gov.
Celebrate Your Neighborhood on Sept. 17
Stronger, closer neighborhoods make better communities, and the National Neighborhood Day foundation wants to see more of them. National Neighborhood Day, held on the second Sunday in September, aims to inspire, build, and sustain the neighborhood relationships that provide the foundation for civic action and the building of stronger, more caring and effective communities. Visit the Web site for ideas and resources for holding your own celebration, whether it's a neighborhood cookout or a community service project.
Deaf Awareness Week
The National Association of the Deaf sponsors Deaf Awareness Week from Sept. 21 - 27. Its objectives include teaching people to differentiate between misconception and fact about deafness and deaf culture; about types, degrees, and causes of hearing loss; about the various forms of sign language and the interpreter's role; and much more. Visit the NAD site for more information or to buy a promotional kit for your organization.
Are you Ready for a Hurricane?
