NASA Administrator, Sean O'Keefe addresses NASA employees from Goddard in building 8 auditorium.

NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe held the most recent of his NASA Updates on
Wednesday from the Goddard Space Flight Center. The topic of this month's
program was NASA's Return to Flight. In his remarks, O'Keefe talked about
the mission of exploration and discovery which the Agency conducts on behalf of the American people. He described the "tremendous risk and gains in the pursuit of exploration and discovery," and the significant public debate of its worthiness that typically follows on the heels of enormous tragedy, such as Apollo 1, Challenger and Columbia. O'Keefe stressed that the American people need to be assured we can safely return to flight saying, "We will fly only when we are fit to fly" and "have worked through all the challenges of ensuring that we [NASA] can."

O'Keefe said the final report of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board
will be issued next month. He said he expects it to contain "very pointed
and very direct." But he encouraged NASA employees not be defensive from the "very direct commentary" of the Board's findings and recommendations. "We are getting a very thorough examination from highly qualified members," he said, and the report will "reveal every aspect of the day-to-day responsibilities that support spaceflight." He added, "The findings and recommendations will articulate what needs to be pursued to ensure safe spaceflight."
