May 10, 1996:
GLOBE and Rescue Mission Join in Partnership

In 1992, four United Nations agencies (UNEP, UNICEF, UNDP and UNESCO) joined to support young people throughout the world in creating "Rescue Mission: Planet Earth," their own, simplified edition of Agenda 21 (the environmental action plan developed by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992). The Rescue Mission organization then developed a set of Indicators for young people to use in monitoring progress on implementing Agenda 21. This two-year Indicators Project culminates in June 1997. An interim report has just been produced in which the following was stated about the GLOBE Program:

"GLOBE is a US Government science education program which has young people measuring environmental Indicators around the world. Data is relayed via the Internet to a central data base which then beams dazzling computer images back to participants showing how their measurements contribute to the global picture."

"In March 1996, Rescue Mission signed an agreement with GLOBE to promote and assist each other. Now Rescue Mission Indicators focus more on human and social issues and less on atmosphere, climate, biology, land cover, hydrology and soils. This is because GLOBE is already covering these issues so excellently, we felt no need to duplicate."
