A Milford Festival of Lights Thank You

Milford, PA – The Pike County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that the 11th Annual Festival of Lights was a great success. Even though festival volunteers had to fight high winds and freezing cold temperatures, more than 150 brave visitors faced ice cold winds to watch the tree and star being lit by Merritt Quinn Mayor of Milford and the Milford Lions Club.

The ceremony, which traditionally marks the beginning of the Holiday Season, took place on December 7, 2008 at 5:30 PM, on the lawn of the Community House in Milford Borough. The crowd joined together with Dingman Delaware Elementary School Choir, directed by Brian Kraus, to sing holiday songs. This was followed by the much anticipated count down and lighting of the tree and star.

Since 1952 the Milford Lions Club has lit the star on The Knob and a tree at the Community House. In 1986 the Milford Lions Club began stringing the lights in the trees throughout Milford Borough at the request of merchants. Bill Harkness, Secretary of the Milford Lions Club, states that more than 50,000 bulbs are lit each year by the Lions volunteers.  This year the club used more than 25,000 new lights to replace lights that didn't work or to add lights to areas that previously did not have lights in the trees. These volunteers, Bill Harkness, Jim Quinn and Jeff Phillips work for several hours each weekend beginning November 1, leading up to the Festival of Lights. They climb into the trees, test the lights that are there, or hang new lights if necessary. The result is a beautifully decorated town, ready for the holiday season.

The Festival of Lights is made possible by the community donations: Pike County Power and Light, Firefly Toy Store, Just Add Sugar, Niki Jones Agency, Wells Ferry Emporium, Milford Craft Show, Patisserie Fauchere, Peter Larkin from CRC Electric, Dick Daddis, Ellen Schaffner, Director of the Pike County Library, Lee Ann Camarero from the Pike County Chamber of Commerce and the Milford Lions Club.

This year marks the 22nd year that the Lions Club has put lights in the trees on Broad and Harford Streets in the Borough. Several years ago the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, Milford Business Council and the Lions Club formed a partnership to create the Festival of Lights in Milford.

Shop Local in the Holiday Season

Milford, PA - As the stock market fluctuates and prices for holiday gift buying seems overwhelming, we all look for ways to cut corners and save money. Yet we still want to be able to get out and get everything we want for ourselves and our families. However, what if I told you that everything you needed was right in your backyard…if only you knew where to look?

The Pike County Chamber of Commerce (PCCC) would like to challenge residents of Pike County and the surrounding areas to do all of their shopping within Pike County for the Holiday Season, just over one month. Look Local and Shop Local!

Pike County proprietors tend to pitch right in when donations are needed for a fundraiser; so why not look to them to help you with your shopping needs as well? Local residents often drive right by Pike County shops on their way to bigger box stores further away, often without realizing all that could be accomplished without having to leave their neighborhood. By buying local you will leave more gas money in your pocket, just what you need today when it is so expensive just to live. By accepting this challenge, you will also be helping out local businesses and allowing them to continue to help you.

Pike County is filled with hidden treasures that people may not be aware of. There are plenty of places in to eat, whether you are looking for a romantic meal for two, a business lunch, or dinner for the family. There are local shops to find unique gifts or trinkets for the home, shops to purchase your weekly groceries and supplies, as well as places to fill your tank or do your banking. There are also many free places to go for history or entertainment, or to simply let the kids play in the park and feed the ducks.

While many tourists migrate to this area all throughout the year, especially in the summer, Pike County is not just a tourist county. You don’t need to escape its confines in order to accomplish daily tasks and find a peaceful respite. Pike County has plenty of appeal for travelers and local residents alike.

So if you’re looking to cut corners, save money and time, try for approximately one month to keep your business local in Pike County. By the end of December, you should be set with a list of local places you can turn to for your family’s entertainment, shopping and relaxation.

You may also find that you have discovered a real gem that you may not have known about had you not set out to get to know your local community better. Pike County find out all it has to offer and reduce your carbon footprint while you are doing it.

You’ve heard of speed dating… now there’s a speed networking opportunity for business. This event is unlike the usual networking experience where you may only get to talk to a handful of people that you approach. Like speed dating, you’ll get the chance to speak to virtually everyone that attends.  Attendees will start at a table where you will get sixty seconds to speak before a bell rings. After one person at the table has given their pitch, the bell will signal the designated “movers” to go to the next table and restart the process.

Be sure to come prepared with your sales literature and an “elevator speech” about your company, your products or your services because you’ll have one minute to let nearly everyone know about it. Don’t forget your business cards, promotional items and a bag to carry the goodies you’ll receive that night. You’ll also learn about the other companies and services in their one-minute pitches. Afterwards, head downstairs to the Cross Eyed Cricket and continue to network in the informal pub setting. This is an excellent opportunity to find new marketing partners who can help you do more business. There is a maximum limit of 2 people per company so that you don’t end up pitching to yourself. Reservations are required call the Pike Chamber office to reserve your space now! No walk-ins allowed.

All local business people are invited to attend, whether they are Chamber members or not. There is a $7 charge for members and a $10 charge for non-members. Pike Chamber Surveys Businesses

MILFORD, PA As reflected in the recent business survey conducted by the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, the expectations of businesses are being met by the Pike Chamber.  The majority of participants find good value in investing in Pike Chamber through membership.

The Pike County business survey, which was developed by the Business-Education Committee of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, welcomed broad participation from Chamber members and non-members.  The goal of the survey was to identify the needs of businesses in Pike County so that the Pike Chamber can develop programs and services to meet those needs as well as aligning its mission and focus to complement current and future needs and expectations of the business community.  The University of Scranton Small Business Development Center is a co-sponsor of the effort.  The business survey was conducted from June 16, 2008 through July 25.  More than fifty businesses in retail, service, manufacturing, and other sectors responded to the survey.  Eighty four percent of the respondents were members.

The respondents noted that the number one priority of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce should be developing networking opportunities, with business referrals as the second highest priority.  Respondents also found that community development, seminars, workshops, and other educational program opportunities are high priorities, with economic development also listed as a high priority of respondents.  Moving forward, the Pike County Chamber of Commerce will utilize the results of the survey to meet the needs outlined in the results of the survey, including implementing educational programs, seminars, and training that meet the needs of business owners as identified in the survey.

“Businesses in Pike County came forward to tell us about their needs, and how we can meet those needs,” stated Scott J. Weiland, executive director of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce.  “According to the survey our businesses want more…more networking opportunities, more referrals, more educational opportunities, and much more, so we are going to work hard to meet their needs.”

Respondents found the Pike Chamber’s outreach tools to also be highly effective.  Ninety six percent of the respondents read the Chamber’s monthly newsletter entitled “NewsFlash,” and more than ninety percent found the Pike Chamber website at www.pikechamber.com to be informative and user friendly, with respondents noting that content on the site is useful, current, and informative.

“We are committed to focusing on specific website improvements and recommendations which were shared in the survey. This important and valuable business resource tool must continually strive to provide tangible benefits for our members and the community” stated Jerry Reganess, chair, Business Education Committee of the Pike Chamber.

At a retreat of the board of directors of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce earlier this year, the directors reinforced the importance of strengthening Chamber services to members and the business community, especially during the current economic slump.  To strengthen the regional economy by understanding the needs of community businesses, the Pike County Chamber of Commerce is continually seeking feedback from county businesses.

Survey respondents noted that they are trying to overcoming fiscal difficulties in our economy, and with this in mind the Pike County Chamber of Commerce is utilizing the survey to develop ways for members to obtain more marketing, exposure and business training with a goal of generating more income and operating efficiency.  “With businesses facing great economic challenges in 2008 and beyond, we are at a critical point in the growth of our area’s economy,” stated Mr. Weiland.  “It is important for the Pike County Chamber of Commerce to help support our county’s businesses and we are committed to this effort.”

As an incentive, participants who completed the survey were entered in a drawing to win several valuable prizes, including a free, thirty second commercial for airing in Pike County and Wayne County, which includes $500 of air time and production of the commercial.  The commercial is sponsored by Viamedia Cable TV Advertising and Digital Reality Productions.  Other prizes include a four week advertisement on the Weather Channel’s weather crawler, a $500 value sponsored by Viamedia Cable TV Advertising and free advertisements in various Chamber media, including www.pikechamber.com.  Participants were also entered to win a $25 Price Chopper gift card, sponsored by Price Chopper.

Shop Local – Let the Pike Chamber help you!

Pike County, PA - With gas prices higher than they’ve been in a long time and no drop in sight, now is the time to plan your shopping trips so that you only have to go to one area…and why not throw in some discounts at these shops as well?

The Pike County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to launch a new program designed to benefit the local consumer, called the Member-to-Member Discount Program. All Pike Chamber members can join M2M for free, and be acknowledged by other Pike Chamber members with special discounts and promotions.

Not only will this program benefit the consumer when less money is required for purchases, but on a larger scale, this program will aid in keeping more retail dollars in Pike County, for the betterment of member businesses. Purchasing from Pike Chamber members will promote its members and the community as a whole by helping local businesses to grow.

All that Pike Chamber members need to do to participate in M2M is fill out a form either in person at the Chamber office, or online at www.pikechamber.com. Though each business can decide what their special offer will be, the Chamber recommends an ideal discount of a minimum of 10 percent off an item in a retail store, a free beverage with the purchase of a meal in a restaurant, or a free gift or similar promotion for a member who utilizes another member’s services.

When a Chamber member signs up for M2M, they will be issued an M2M X-Change Card. Each member simply presents that card at the time of purchase to receive the special offer. A listing of local discount opportunities is listed at www.pikechamber.com.  Participating businesses are also encouraged to display a sign at their location, as well as on their website, to promote the program as well as their own business.

The Chamber has launched a test pilot of the program, which runs from September 2008 through December 2008, with cards issued now to members therefore being valid through December 31, 2008. In subsequent years, enrollment in M2M will last one calendar year, from January through December.

Members can change their discounts or promotions one time per calendar year without incurring a fee. Members may change their promotions associated with the card more often for a nominal fee to help Pike Chamber expenses. However, businesses will be encouraged to maintain a general discount or promotion for the entire year.

Participating members can give the Pike Chamber permission to advertise their discount in newsletters, flyers, e-mails and on the Internet. This will not only promote M2M, but provide free advertisement for local businesses as well.

Join the Member-to-Member Discount Program today to start saving in your local area, by using less gas and enjoying discounts in local businesses.

Grand "Reveal" Opening of The Forklift Cafe

After getting up and running for a year serving breakfast and lunch, The Forklift Café is now serving dinner on Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays.   A grand opening is what the Chamber calls it but The Forklift Café called it a “Reveal” because they have been open and they are just revealing publicly & celebrating for the first time what they are; and the Pike County Chamber helped to celebrate this event with them.   Owner LoriAnn Hines wanted to also proudly introduce Chef Tony Sicuro who prepares tasty meals from Maryland Style Crab Cakes, Salmon Wellington, Blackened Rib Eye Steak, to Cracked Peppercorn Seared Veal Loin or a Roasted New Zealand Rack of Lamb.  Stop by The Forklift Café at 1831 Route 739 (across from Dime Bank) in Dingmans Ferry and enjoy the casual relaxed atmosphere but elegant breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Pike Chamber Board Retreat inspires creative thinking!

Photo credit: Jerry Reganess leads discussion at Chamber retreat.

Pike County, Pennsylvania – Recently, the Pike County Chamber of Commerce board of directors attended a retreat to discuss and determine a new creative vision and direction for the chamber in 2008.

A mediator guided the directors through a series of creative thinking exercises intended to stimulate positive, creative and energetic thoughts. These exercises helped the participants enhance the Chamber’s marketing direction and vision.

This year, the Chamber is looking to increase its membership, increase board and member diversity and expand its member benefits through creative marketing and inventive business practices.

So what is the Chamber doing that works?

The Pike Chamber works hard to broaden awareness of businesses in Pike County, and not only in Milford. The Chamber creates opportunities for businesses to network by planning business card exchanges, meet and greets and signature events. These various events are held throughout Pike County and are highly attended. The Pike Chamber will also continue to hold grand openings and other special events intended to promote and stimulate business in and around the county.

The Chamber also provides opportunities for group discount advertising, member to member, and member to consumer, discount programs, as well as advertising opportunities in the Visitor’s Guide, which is distributed to over 10,000 annual visitors. Members can also take advantage of discounted advertising opportunities available through the Chamber of Commerce website www.pikechamber.com such as banner and premium placement ads. Each month, the Chamber publishes a newsletter, which provides an opportunity for a business to be spotlighted, both in the newsletter and on its website.

The Chamber also distributes press releases announcing upcoming activities, marketing statistics and other topics of community interest. The Chamber’s website, www.pikechamber.com, receives approximately 5,600 unique hits per month and is used as a vital tool and resource for business people, tourists and residents alike.

The Pike County Chamber of Commerce continuously works on ways to improve their communication with their members, such as the website, email, media and e- Newsletter. The Chamber has plans to broaden their collaboration with other chambers and business organizations through networking and marketing initiatives.
Pike Chamber is also working on bolstering their already strong connections with builders associations, IDA/PIDCO, local, state and federal government, and members of the local and regional media. The Chamber will continue having a working relationship with area organizations such as Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry and Pocono Mountains Visitor’s Bureau. “The Pike County Chamber is growing,” stated Scott J. Weiland, Executive Director.  “Our goal is to grow our local economy, and we are pleased to partner with so many organizations and volunteers to do so.”

What will start to improve?
Moving forward in 2008 the Pike County Chamber of Commerce will explore new avenues for growth, which may include broadening their access to more people by expanding the distribution of their publications and informational kiosks around the county.  The organization will continue to grow traffic to www.pikechamber.com, establish e-blast software and marketing lists to send out information to its members, and to continue Grand Openings and Meet and Greets.

The Chamber plans to study and disseminate marketing results about the demographics and psychographics of Pike County. Additionally, the Chamber will survey members and potential members to get feedback as to what is working best for people as well as to find out what is missing.

Members of the Chamber can enjoy enhanced benefits like insurance, advertising and networking. Being a Chamber member allows you to participate in group health and workers compensation programs.  Also, members can take part in events that draw great numbers of people from throughout the region. Many events are planned for the upcoming months and are available at www.pikechamber.com, These events promote Pike County’s #1 industry, tourism.

Pike Chamber to Host Speed Businesses Event

Milford, PA – The Pike County Chamber of Commerce is planning a new type of business event which has been inspired by the concept of speed dating. “1-Minute Marketing - A Quick Pitch” will take place at Cliff Park Inn on Wednesday, February 27th. Unlike the usual networking experience, where participants only get to speak with a handful of people, that they approach themselves, this event will be like speed dating because participants will get the chance to speak to virtually everyone that attends.

The goal of speed networking is to end up with new marketing relationships that will benefit Chamber members and local business people that attend.

How does it work? When the business professionals first arrive, they will register, be assigned a letter and let loose to mingle at the bar until the formal portion of the event begins. Once everyone is ready, participants will start off at a station where one person from each table will get sixty seconds to speak. When a bell rings, the next person will speak. After each person at the table has given their pitch, the bell will signify the start of an open discussion minute. When the bell rings again, the designated “movers” will go to their next tables, and the process will be repeated.

Those attending should come prepared with sales literature and an “elevator speech” about their company, products or services because they’ll have one minute to let nearly everyone know about it. Participants should also not forget to bring plenty of business cards, promotional items and a bag to carry the goodies they’ll receive that night.

Space for Pike Chamber’s “1-Minute Marketing – A Quick Pitch” is limited and expected to sell out, so reservations are required. Chamber members will be charged a fee of $5.00, and the Chamber welcomes and encourages non members to attend. Non members arriving on their own will be charged $10.00. However, the Chamber is offering a 2-for-1 special for members that bring a non member guest. The Pike Chamber has put a limit of 2 people, from any one firm, being allowed to participate. This rule is so businesses won’t be pitching to themselves.

Cliff Park Inn is located just outside of Milford Borough off of Route 1. The February 27th event will begin with registration, promptly at 5:30 pm. The speed networking is expected to begin by 6:00 pm and run for approximately an hour to an hour and a half.

After the event, Cliff Park Inn has invited participants to head downstairs to the Cross-Eyed Cricket and continue to network in the informal pub setting. This is an excellent opportunity to find new marketing partners who can help you do more business.

The Pike County Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit organization consisting of over 450 area businesses, professionals and civic organizations.  Incorporated in 1962, the membership continues to grow and diversify, all with one common goal: to strengthen the business environment and enhance the quality of life in Pike County.

Make your reservations today by calling the Chamber office at 570-296-8700. Find out more about this event or the Pike County Chamber of Commerce by calling the office, or by visiting www.pikechamber.com.

Over 55,000 E-Visits to Pike County in 2007

Milford, PA – More than 4,300 people working in Pike County rely on tourism to generate an income. In 2007, the Pike County Chamber of Commerce’s website recorded over 55,000 unique, electronic visitors, and total sales generated by traveler spending for 2006 in Pike County was an estimated $189 million – according to the 2007 Annual Report published by the Pocono Mountains Visitor’s Bureau. These figures are expected to grow in 2008 as travelers are predicted to take several short getaways throughout the year as opposed to one long vacation that includes a flight. Located within a two hour drive from New York City, Pike County falls within the perfect distance for travelers looking for a weekend getaway.

How are people finding out about Pike County? The Internet. The Pike County Chamber of Commerce tracks electronic visitors to their website, PikeChamber.com. More than 55,000 unique e-visitors checked out the county’s offerings of outdoor activities, shopping and dining choices and selection of places to stay the night.

Nearly half of all the website visitors came to the Pike Chamber’s site through organic keyword searches using Google. This is where a person types a word or phrase such as “Milford” in Google, and then they click on a result that brings them to the Chamber’s website.

Just less than 10,000 visitors, or approximately 18%, have originated from Pike County. Out of the remaining 45,000 U.S. visitors, the overwhelming majority, almost 48%, come from the New York City metro area or northern New Jersey. Manhattan alone accounted for more than 5,300 visitors.

Other markets that showed a significant concentration in traffic include Orange County, New York, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and the Philadelphia marketplace.

While tourism related visits were among the top reasons that people used the site, other segments of the website also showed a significant number of visitors. Relocation services, realtors, and builders saw at least 15,000 unique visitors.
The Membership directory in 2007 received over 19,000 page views. With locals and out-of-town visitors, alike, looking at the events calendar constituted nearly 14,000 unique page views.

No matter what the reason for visiting the Pike Chamber’s website in 2007, the statistics show that PikeChamber.com has become a resource for a variety of groups to gain information about doing business in Pike County. In 2008, the Chamber plans to continue to enhance information found on the site and to become an even better tool for people to learn about, visit and live in Pike County. In the larger sense, the Chamber’s website is becoming so much more than just another Internet webpage, but instead, it is an online community that represents Pike County.
