HFIR & SNS History

HFIR and SNS were originally built for different reasons. SNS was constructed to meet the needs of the neutron scattering community, as current spallation facilities around the world were aging. HFIR was constructed to produce isotopes for use in various fields.

Today, HFIR's primary mission has changed, with its focus on neutron scattering research. Together, the capabilities of the two facilities complement each other.
