Mission of the Department of Health and Human Services

In one way or another, the Department of Health and Human Services touches the life of almost every person in the United States. The fundamental mission of HHS is to protect and advance the health of the American people and to improve their quality of life. Some of the broad areas encompassed by HHS' mission are:

The study and treatment of diseases, such as heart disorders, cancer and stroke;

Controlling communicable diseases and eradicating epidemics;

Increasing the nation's hospital facilities and the number of physicians, dentists, nurses, social workers, rehabilitation specialists, and allied health personnel;

Providing rehabilitation services to the physically and mentally disabled and the socially disadvantaged;

Controlling occupational health hazards;

Inspecting foods, drugs, and cosmetics to determine whether they are pure and safe;

Reducing the social handicaps of poor children;

Providing financial security and better medical care to the aged;

Giving assistance to people who are unable to work;

Conducting research in a variety of health and social areas; and

Providing resources and expertise to States, other public and private institutions and to Tribes, Councils and organizations concerned with the health of American Indians and Alaska Natives in the planning, direction and delivery of physical and mental health care services.
