Energy Storage Simulation

NREL's vehicle systems analysts support efforts to improve energy storage devices—such as battery modules and ultracapacitors—for fuel cell, hybrid electric, and electric vehicles.

We collaborate with NREL's Energy Storage Project.

Dual Energy Storage Evaluation

To demonstrate that lead-acid battery + ultracapacitor systems offer competitive advantages in some hybrid vehicle applications, we completed a study of 42V energy storage system options. This involved a comparison among:

  • Lead-acid batteries
  • Lithium-ion batteries
  • Ultracapacitors
  • Nickel-metal hydride batteries
  • Lead-acid battery + ultracapacitors.

To compare them, we simulated the performance of these energy storage systems over cycles and indicated potential life cycle enhancements.

Energy Storage Modeling Improvements

We created a basic energy storage system model that highlights the potential cost and benefits of a dual technology system. The model incorporates multiple ADVISOR submodels.
