Product Description

Survey Photography is a large and diverse group of aerial photos from within the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Center for Earth Resources Observations and Science (EROS) historical film archives. The photos date from 1940 to present, and they were originally acquired by a wide variety of sources such as NASA, EPA, BLM, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and others.

Survey Photography is not a standardized product, and individual photos will vary in scale, size, quality, and coverage. This film is archived and produced as individual rolls and frames. Photos will be available in black & white (B/W), color, or color infrared (CIR), depending on source. Although the majority of these aerial photos were taken from a vertical perspective, some photos were taken from an oblique aerial view.

Digital File Sizes

High resolution Scanned - *.TIFF images:

Film Size Micron Size Black and white (B/W) Color-infrared (CIR)
9 x 9 in 21 Micron (1200 dpi) 117 MB 350 MB
14 Micron (1800 dpi) 262 MB 787 MB
7 Micron (3600 dpi) 1.3 GB Not Available**
9 x 18 in 21 Micron (1200 dpi) 117 MB(x2 files) 350 MB(x2 files)
14 Micron (1800 dpi) 262 MB(x2 files) 787 MB(x2 files)
7 Micron (3600 dpi) 1.3 GB(x2 files) Not Available**

** Color/CIR film source is not available at a 7 micron spot size because the file size is too large and/or there are no advantages below the 14 micron spot size.

The above sizes may vary due to scanning more than just image data. With our policy to scan the surrounding metadata and the addition of the USGS logo the actual image size will generally be larger than the estimates above.

Medium Resolution Digitized - *.TIFF images:

The file sizes are approximately 15 megabytes for black and white images and 40 megabytes for color images. The files are stored in a TIFF format. The medium-resolution files are created at approximately 600 dpi.
