Food Safety During Power Outages
As a result of the severe windstorms many residents in Ohio have experienced power outages. The Ohio Department of Health and The Ohio Department of Agriculture are providing this information on “Food Safety During Powers Outages” for those residents who may have been effected.

Safety in Your Home During Power Outages
Severe windstorms and resulting power outages have led some Ohio residents to use generators to power their homes and grills, camp stoves or other devices to cook food. While these items can help provide basic comforts during power outages, it is important to be aware of some of the dangers involved. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided this information on carbon monoxide poisoning and electrical safety with generators to help keep you and your family safe.

Ohio Tobacco Quit Line Hasn’t Quit on You
When the Ohio Tobacco Prevention Foundation recently ceased operations, many Ohioans incorrectly thought the Ohio Tobacco Quit Line – 1-800-QUIT-NOW – had ceased operations with it. Rest assured, the quit line has not quit on you. The Ohio Tobacco Quit Line is now housed at the Ohio Department of Health and continues to provide invaluable assistance to smokers who want to kick the tobacco habit. Tobacco counselors are available to help you from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Soon-to-be-former smokers can also leave a message 24 hours a day and request a call-back time that is convenient for them.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Awareness and Prevention Month
Governor Ted Strickland has designated September 2008 as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Awareness and Prevention Month “to promote awareness of prenatal exposure to alcohol, to increase compassion for those individuals so affected, to minimize further effects, and to ensure healthier communities across this great state in the future.” View a copy of the official designation.

“Jarod’s Law” rules in effect
School safety and inspection rules (also known as “Jarod’s Law” rules) went into effect Sept. 27, 2007. The law, named for Jarod Bennett, and its associated rules are designed to protect and improve the environmental health and safety of Ohio’s primary and secondary school students and the staff working in school buildings. 2008 Medical Record Fee Scale
Per Ohio Revised Code 3701.742, the Ohio Department of Health is required to adjust the fees that health care providers and medical records companies may charge for medical records during 2008.
